The plot is familiar enough, but I did not realize that the story was narrated mostly by the housekeeper telling her memories of the main characters. Had I known that I would have chosen a different narrator-maybe a version with 2 actors (1 male, 1 female). This narrator did a good job, but I think I would have enjoyed 2 voices instead of one.

Start at Chapter 29 for the Man in the Iron Mask

Since this book is part of a much (much) longer book, you will want to start at chapter 29 if you want to dive right in to the actual Man in the Iron Mask part. The chapters leading up to that set the stage for some of the other characters, so if you have time to listen, then do so! The performance was OK. Voices were consistent, and it was read at a good pace, I just did not like the voice he chose for D'Artagnion.

The House of the Seven Gables is a difficult read, to say the least. The story does not have much of a plot, the characters are somewhat one note, and the language is so pedantic there were several times I had to Google a word. I did have a giggle at a few places (there is a very interesting observation about Pilgrims and their conjugal relations), and there are some tender moments between the characters, so it was not an overall waste of time. Read it/listen to it with a mindset that this is like a piece of art or poetry and you will probably enjoy it more.

I was not initially impressed with Davina's voice and performance; I found it too scratchy and I did not like how she read Claire. It has grown on me, and I love listening while I go about my house doing chores throughout the day.

Kate Reading did an excellent job in this version of Pride and Prejudice. I enjoyed her tonality, inflections, pace and overall performance. The quality of the recording itself was pretty good, too.

I will comment first on the overall voice performances; I have not listened to very many ensemble cast versions of recorded books and over all this cast did a good job and the quality was good. The woman who read for Marian did a great job as Marian, but her interpretation of The Count's voice was awful...just...terrible. That is my only complaint on the performance side of things. The overall story of The Woman in White is good. I went into this reading with no knowledge of the plot and there were several spots where I was on the edge of my seat in anticipation of what was to come. Wilkie kept me guessing for most of the novel in regards to the mysteries that were taking place. The end of the story does drag on a bit; rather like an old James Bond film where the bad guy reveals his whole secret plan with 30 minutes still to go in the movie, but it was interesting to hear the different perspectives from the "witnesses". Overall I'd recommend this story to anyone who enjoys a mystery/thriller/courtroom drama.

Dan Stevens did a wonderful job interpreting this novel. His take on The Monster's voice and character was spot on, and he did a great job with the other voices too. I liked the pace his voice spoke at.

I enjoyed the narration of this story. He had good voice inflection and did a nice job with the characters' voices. This was a book my book club chose to read. Towards the end of the story Bill Sykes is on the run. This narrator did an excellent job reading that part and I enjoyed his interpretation of events...but when it came time for my book club's discussion it turned out I was the only one who got that interpretation out of those scenes! The narrator had me convinced because of his vocal inflections that the scenes were happening a certain way, but my other book club members disagreed! I just think that was an interesting take-away.
