Historia
This is the extraordinary story of Vasily B. Emelianenko, the veteran pilot of one of the Soviet Union's most contradictory planes of the Second World War - the I1-2. Having flown 80 combat sorties against the Germans, Emelianenko was awarded the highest decoration - the Hero of the Soviet Union. He went on to complete a total of 92 sorties; his plane was shot down three times; and on each occasion, he managed to pilot the damaged aircraft home. Emelianenko's vivid memoirs provide a rare insight into the reality of fighting over the Eastern Front and the tactics of the Red Army Air Force.

Beautifully written fantasy

Narrative has an implausible number of convenient coincidences, to the point that you start to doubt the narrator. Still appreciated it for its flowery descriptions of scenery and air combat. Lots of Russian terms in the text are left untranslated or unexplained into English— "pyatiletka" (five year plan) ; "OSOAVIAKHIM" (civil defense society) ; "hundred grams" (vodka ration)

Uninspiring Repetitive Drivel
Revisado: 12-20-23
Abysmal view of what most authors in other books on the subject are able to form into something resembling a positive symbol of Allied heroism. I quit this a third of the way through after nonstop dreary minutiae about every single failed/inconclusive action the authors decided to cram down the reader's gullet

Historia
Civilization was born 8,000 years ago, between the floodplains of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, when migrants from the surrounding mountains and deserts began to create increasingly sophisticated urban societies. In the cities that they built, half of human history took place. In Babylon, Paul Kriwaczek tells the story of Mesopotamia from the earliest settlements seven thousand years ago to the eclipse of Babylon in the sixth century BCE. Bringing the people of this land to life in vibrant detail, the author chronicles the rise and fall of power during this period.

Historia
The Napoleonic Wars saw fighting on an unprecedented scale in Europe and the Americas. It took the wealth of the British Empire, combined with the might of the continental armies, almost two decades to bring down one of the world's greatest military leaders and the empire that he had created. Napoleon's ultimate defeat was to determine the history of Europe for almost 100 years. From the frozen wastelands of Russia, through the brutal fighting in the Peninsula to the blood-soaked battlefield of Waterloo, this book tells the story of the dramatic rise and fall of the Napoleonic Empire.

Well researched but a drag
Revisado: 12-19-23
Mikeberidze is clearly a smart well spoken guy as evidenced by his public interviews, but this one was a slog to get through. Part of it is the narrator's droning voice sure, but also the constant changing of settings and characters with little relation to one another really got old fast. I would only recommend this to veteran students of the Napoleonic era, as for me a beginner it was a real chore to finish (took me literal months of quitting and coming back)

Historia
Between 1348 and 1715, western Europe was fraught with turmoil, beset by the Black Plague, numerous and bitter religious wars, and frequent political revolutions and upheavals. Yet the Europe that emerged from this was vastly different from the Europe that entered it. By the start of the 18th century, Europe had been revitalized and reborn in a radical break with the past that would have untold ramifications for human civilization.

Historia
The British wars began on the morning of 23 July 1637, heralding 200 years of battles. Most were driven by religious or political conviction, as Republicans and Royalists, Catholics and Protestants, Tories and Whigs, and colonialists and natives vied for supremacy. Of the battles not fought on home territory, many took place across Europe, America, India, and also at sea. Schama's examination of this turbulent period reveals how the British people eventually united in imperial enterprise, forming 'Britannia Incorporated'.

Excellent survey showing the continuity between the British and American revolutions, as well as well fleshed out economic and social history of the empire. Sadly nothing on Queen Anne's war or the Duke of Marlborough, however.

Historia
In this major and wholly original contribution to military history, John Keegan reverses the usual convention of writing about war in terms of generals and nations in conflict, which tends to leave the common soldier as cipher. Instead, he focuses on what a set battle is like for the man in the thick of it.

Historia
In the early 18th century, the Pirate Republic was home to some of the great pirate captains, including Blackbeard, "Black Sam" Bellamy, and Charles Vane. Along with their fellow pirates - former sailors, indentured servants, and runaway slaves - this "Flying Gang" established a crude but distinctive democracy in the Bahamas, carving out their own zone of freedom in which servants were free, Blacks could be equal citizens, and leaders were chosen or deposed by a vote.

Historia
Dawn on Sunday, June 22, 1941 saw the opening onslaughts of Operation Barbarossa as German forces stormed forward into the Soviet Union. Few of them were to survive the five long years of bitter struggle. A posting to the Eastern Front during the Second World War was rightly regarded with dread by the German soldiers. They saw epic battles such as Stalingrad and Kursk, and yet it was a daily war of attrition which ultimately proved fatal for Hitler's ambition and the German military machine.

Propagandistic Trash Read by a Passable Narrator
Revisado: 05-17-22
How to describe this book: "artistic license" at best, full on Nazi propaganda at worst. German offensives described pornographically as "virile thrusts" several times. Red Army soldiers described as faceless hordes; suicidal drones incapable of independent thought. Apart from a few in interesting accounts of weather and logistics, most of this book is fantastical accounts of combat given by German veterans eager to whitewash their record in a genocidal war of annihilation which THEY STARTED; something the author seems eager to help them do. This is borne out by the fact that he mostly only covers the 1941-42 period, referring to 43-45 barely in passing, as if Soviet victories were just a passing glitch, something as incidental as the weather. An obsolete, stupid book. Wish I could get my 15 dollars back.
