Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Difficult subject matter
Revisado: 02-23-25
Barbara Kingsolver never disappoints. I love the characters and the performance of Demon was spot on. There were many eye opening moments for me throughout the story. The oxycontin epidemic is/was tragic. It was difficult to listen to during many parts of the story, wishing I could reach out and hug and protect Demon.

Historia
A thirty-four-year-old American woman—a secret agent—is sent to do dirty work in France. “Sadie Smith” is how the narrator introduces herself to her lover, to the rural commune of French subversives on whom she is keeping tabs, and to the reader. Sadie has met her love, Lucien, a young and well-born Parisian, by “cold bump”—making him believe the encounter was accidental. Like everyone Sadie targets, Lucien is useful to her and used by her. Sadie operates by strategy and dissimulation, based on what her “contacts”—shadowy figures in business and government—instruct.

Not my favorite
Revisado: 01-23-25
I picked this because of strong reviews. I stuck with it but did not enjoy the story or narration. I find it hard to like a book if I cannot relate to the characters. Most of them were just not nice people.

With the hope of a better life in America calling, Honora keeps moving toward her freedom.

I read the book many years ago in high school. This was a treat to listen to as I drove many hours on a long trip. Very well narrated.

A few holes
Revisado: 07-10-23
The entry dates did not always match with the timeline of the story. There were inconsistencies within characters, particularly Iris. Either that or she was just stupid. However, I am good at rearranging the story in my mind, so it did entertain me. I do like Aoife McMahon.

All girls should have louding voices
Revisado: 06-12-23
The narration was superb with an excellent understanding and voice for each character. The story was heart wrenching, hopeful, maddening, and even funny at times. Highly recommended.
