Historia
Waco, Texas, 1993. People from all walks of life have arrived to follow the Lamb’s gospel—signing over savings and pensions, selling their homes and shedding marriages. They’ve come here to worship at the feet of a former landscaper turned prophet who is preparing for the End Times with a staggering cache of weapons. Jaye’s mother is one of his newest and most devout followers, though Jaye herself has suspicions about the Lamb’s methods—and his motives.

Poetic exposition of the beautifully mundane
Revisado: 10-18-24
The story certainly kept my interest. But what I loved were the perfectly phrased observations of everyday experience. Like Romeo and Juliet, for me it wasn’t about the plot. It was about all the moments of beauty and wisdom along the way.

Some of the smartest commentary about what’s happening in America is coming from a comedian—this comedian being Bill Maher. If you want to understand what’s wrong with this country, it turns out that one of the best informed and most thought-provoking analysts is this very funny pothead.

Finally, a defense of sanity
Revisado: 06-17-24
Have you been wondering how it is possible half of the country can actually prefer Trump? Have you questioned some of the recent liberal “causes” but thought maybe you were just not a good enough liberal? The best writers distill ideas the masses have vaguely felt, but have been unable to articulate. Bill Maher in this book has done just that. He explains in plain English that we are not crazy! The left has gone too far and focused on insignificant things at the expense of significant things. So much so that it drives many in the middle to be willing to vote for a monster over a Democrat. Every liberal should read this and send it to all their liberal and middle of the road friends. Let’s stop being the liberals unwilling to call out the woke nonsense.

Historia
In this world of bribes, vendettas, and swindling, in which heiresses are gambled and won, Trollope's characters embody all the vices: Lady Carbury is 'false from head to foot'; her son Felix has 'the instincts of a horse, not approaching the higher sympathies of a dog'; and Melmotte - the colossal figure who dominates the book - is a 'horrid, big, rich scoundrel...a bloated swindler...a vile city ruffian'. But as vile as he is, he is considered one of Trollope's greatest creations.

The writing is so charming and witty. Also, the narrator is as good as it gets. His intonation, timing and voices are perfection.

Great summary of basic cognitive skills to those who are new to mindfulness, gratefulness practice, and other pretty basic self help skills for positive thinking. I’ve spent years cultivating these things so it was not anything very particular to singleness. I wish I had had this basic summary all in one place when I first started.

Pain is complicated. But most of the time, the way we treat pain is superficial - we seek out states of perfect painlessness by avoiding it at all costs, or suppressing it, usually with drugs. This has left us hurting all the more. Through in-depth interviews, investigation into the history of pain and original research, Ouch! paints a new picture of pain as a complex and multi-layered phenomenon.

Narrator was very distracting
Revisado: 12-04-22
I’ve never really noticed narrators one way or the other. But this narrator had such unnatural cadence and emphasis that it was painful to listen to. If you aren’t retested in this book, I suggest not listening to the audio, but reading the paper version.

Misconstruction of a basis in science
Revisado: 01-09-22
I am quite open and always interested in the power of our minds to affect reality. I read this book in hopes to learn more about that. It was a disappointment.
The author attempts to bootstrap onto scientific principles to prove that the laws of physics can be overcome by our own belief. But he misconstrues the fact that measuring an electron, for instance, affects the electron. He conflates that to prove if we believe something against the laws of physics enough, we can manifest it. That would be like saying if we are about to measure where an electron is, and we decide we believe it will be in a particular position strongly enough, we can cause it to show up there when we measure. That is NOT how it works.
Another example of misusing science was the shift in belief that took place with the Copernican view of the solar system. He tries to say that Copernicus believed the Sun was the center and sure enough it was, to prove if we believe, we can make something true. He neglects to realize that the reason the Copernican theory is true is not because Copernicus believed it, but because it was objectively already true. Copernicus did not change anything by his belief. He merely discovered what was already objectively so.
Books like these are what make it so hard to be open to new possibilities. You have to wade thru so much nonsense to try and find anything actually persuasive or enlightening. Another bust.

Everything All at Once is an exciting, inspiring call to unleash the power of the nerd mindset that exists within us all. Nye believes we'll never be able to tackle our society's biggest, most complex problems if we don't even know how to solve the small ones. Step by step, he shows his listeners the key tools behind his everything-all-at-once approach: radical curiosity, a deep desire for a better future, and a willingness to take the actions needed to make it a reality.

Preaching to the Choir
Revisado: 07-30-21
I love Bill Nye. But I was disappointed in the book. It was a very eloquent plea for people to think in a progressive way and be open to new ideas. But most of us who would buy this book already think that way.
There were a precious few nuggets of Bill addressing specific things like GMOs and Monsanto that were the type of info I appreciate. It’s a waste of his extreme expertise in so many area to spend 95% of the book on general pleas to think scientifically. It would be much more useful for Bill to give us the Cliffnote version of his conclusions on bogus ideas and/or good ones. Many people like me agree with how assertions should be vetted, but don’t have the time or expertise to do so. Because I trust Bill has this, I would love to hear more actual topics discussed.
I can’t think of anything in the book I disagreed with, but I already knew 95% of what he told me. I was hoping to hear more specifics.

The guru to the gurus at last shares his knowledge with the rest of us. Nobel laureate Daniel Kahneman's seminal studies in behavioral psychology, behavioral economics, and happiness studies have influenced numerous other authors, including Steven Pinker and Malcolm Gladwell. In Thinking, Fast and Slow, Kahneman at last offers his own, first book for the general public. It is a lucid and enlightening summary of his life's work. It will change the way you think about thinking. Two systems drive the way we think and make choices, Kahneman explains....

Insulting To Both Men and Women
Revisado: 12-08-17
This book was unbearably condescending to women and didn't give men credit for being much more capable of discernment or seeing through obvious ruses which skirt the real issues. The basic premise is stroke a man's ego and never question him. He is the "Captain" and the way for his "First Mate" to be irresistible is to be subservient and non confrontational. That may work great on a ship, but not for mature adults in a relationship.
