Historia
Simon and Vicky couldn’t seem more normal: a wealthy Chicago couple, he a respected law professor, she an advocate for domestic violence victims. A stable, if unexciting marriage. But one thing’s for sure: absolutely nothing is what it seems. The pair are far from normal, and one of them just may be a killer. When the body of a beautiful socialite is found hanging in a mansion in a nearby suburb, Simon and Vicky’s secrets begin to unravel. A secret whirlwind affair. A twenty-million-dollar trust fund about to come due.

I had started regretting that I started this book. I need someone to root for in every book I read but I hated almost every single character. Then the last two hours happen. Be patient!

Historia
Savannah Webster is trying to find her way forward. She and her husband, Hez, have been separated since tragedy tore them apart and he began numbing his grief and guilt with alcohol. She returned to Tupelo Grove University, which her family helped found over a century ago, to teach history. When Hez turns up in her classroom asking for a second chance, she rejects the idea immediately. But twenty-four hours later she’s under suspicion for murder, and since Hez is the best attorney she knows, she reluctantly asks him for help.

Historia
After everything that the citizens of Beartown have gone through, they are struck yet another blow when they learn that their beloved local hockey team will soon be disbanded. What makes it worse is the obvious satisfaction that all the former Beartown players, who now play for a rival team in Hed, take in that fact. Amidst the mounting tension between the two rivals, a surprising newcomer is handpicked to be Beartown's new hockey coach. Soon a new team starts to take shape around Amat, the fastest player you'll ever see; Benji, the crazed lone wolf; and Vidar, a born-to-be-bad troublemaker.

Revisado: 03-18-24
LOVED BEAR TOWN so I couldn’t wait to listen to US AGAINST YOU. This book was a little darker and made me feel like I was on a bigger roller coaster of emotions but it all made sense in the end. Masterfully written and beautifully performed! MUST READ!

Historia
People say Beartown is finished. A tiny community nestled deep in the forest, it is slowly losing ground to the ever encroaching trees. But down by the lake stands an old ice rink, built generations ago by the working men who founded this town. And in that ice rink is the reason people in Beartown believe tomorrow will be better than today. Their junior ice hockey team is about to compete in the national semifinals, and they actually have a shot at winning.

Better than anything I could have imagined
Revisado: 03-14-24
5 stars are not enough. I tried listening to A MAN CALLED OVE but I just couldn’t get into it. I cautiously listened to ANXIOUS PEOPLE and loved it, so my daughter insisted I might like this book too. I am not a hockey fan so I read this book under duress. It did not take long for me to know that I was really going to like it and not long after that, “might like” turned into “must love”. This book takes place in a hockey town but it is about so much more than that. In this book, BEAR TOWN my so much depth and the characters have so much substance. Marin Ireland might also be my new favorite narrator!

Historia
Valerie has been forgetting things. Her daughter worries about her being on her own in her big Victorian house—one rumored to be haunted after a tragedy decades earlier—and truth be told, she is a little lonely. With few options, she asks her adult son to move home, but it’s not quite the reunion she hoped for. Hudson is taciturn, moody, and frequently gone. The neighbors already hold a grudge against Hudson, and they aren’t happy about his return. When a young woman is found murdered a block away, suspicion falls on him immediately, without a shred of evidence.

Historia
Anne Gallagher grew up enchanted by her grandfather’s stories of Ireland. Heartbroken at his death, she travels to his childhood home to spread his ashes. There, overcome with memories of the man she adored and consumed by a history she never knew, she is pulled into another time. The Ireland of 1921, teetering on the edge of war, is a dangerous place in which to awaken. But there Anne finds herself, hurt, disoriented, and under the care of Dr. Thomas Smith, guardian to a young boy who is oddly familiar.

Excellent weaving of past and present
Revisado: 01-16-24
I was not expecting time travel (should have read the summary better) or I might not have bought this book. But I was SO PLEASANTLY SURPRISED! I loved this book and I love this narrator which is how I found this book. I’m not Irish but I enjoyed learning about Ireland’s conflicts and I imagine that if you are Irish, you might like it even more. I found myself going back to the first few chapters (after I finished) to see where past and present overlapped.

Historia
Porter Beck is the sheriff in the high desert of Nevada, north of Las Vegas. Born and raised there, he left to join the Army, where he worked in Intelligence, deep in the shadows in far off places. Now he's back home, doing the same lawman's job his father once did, before his father started to develop dementia. All is relatively quiet in this corner of the world, until on old, retired FBI agent is found killed. He was brutally tortured before he was killed and clues at the scene point to a mystery dating back to the early days of the nuclear age.

Not a bad story if predictable
Revisado: 12-11-23
Can we all agree that the word“nuclear” is neither spelled nor pronounced “nucular”? Shame on a professional to mispronounce this word. It was so distracting and because the word nuclear was so key to the central theme, just when I was feeling totally submerged into the story, his mispronunciation would shock me back to reality and ruin the reading. I’ll avoid anything from this narrator in the future.

Historia
From America's most inventive novelist, Jonathan Lethem, comes this compelling and compulsive riff on the classic detective novel. Lionel Essrog is Brooklyn's very own Human Freakshow, an orphan whose Tourettic impulses drive him to bark, count, and rip apart language in startling and original ways. Together with three veterans of the St. Vincent's Home for Boys, he works for small-time mobster Frank Minna's limo service cum detective agency. Life without Frank, the charismatic King of Brooklyn, would be unimaginable.

The main character has Tourette’s so every single paragraph has a Tourette’s outburst that is SOOOO distracting and annoying. Made it difficult to focus on the story.

Maybe it was just me
Revisado: 01-28-23
Maybe I didn’t read the description of this book well enough but this story is based on the memoirs of somebody whose life, while more interesting than mine was told in a very drawn out BORING book. I normally read/listen to at least one book each week because I can’t wait to continue it. This book took perseverance and more than three weeks to finish. Should have cut my losses at the end of week one!

Historia
Leigh Collier has worked hard to build what looks like a normal life. She has a good job as a defense attorney, a daughter doing well in school, and even her divorce is relatively civilized - her life is just as unremarkable as she’d always hoped it would be. But Leigh’s ordinary life masks a childhood that was far from average...a childhood tarnished by secrets, broken by betrayal, and finally torn apart by a devastating act of violence.

This was a 5-star story I wish I hadn’t read.
Revisado: 11-29-22
I thought the story was a good one hence the 5 stars. However, I don’t like to be witness to pedophilia or rape. This book gets so descriptive at times that I felt like I was there witnessing these horrendous crimes then needing a shower to wash off the stench afterwards. Not to mention how it affected me emotionally. If this story could be told without the disturbing brutality then I think I could recommend it. It’s not because I choose to ignore that these crimes exist, it’s because I don’t need to experience them with such detailed writing. In its current form l cannot. Reader beware!
