Narrator was a poor fit

The new reader either didn't care or didn't read any of the previous books because he did not match anyone to their descriptions.
It was obvious that he used his stock voices and just matched them willy-nilly to characters. This caused me to actually read about half of the novel so I wouldn't have to listen to him mangle the characters.
The story wasn't bad overall, but it continues to suffer from Villain syndrome in that the bad guys,known throughout the series for their expertise in the bioscience, suddenly whip out technologies equal to or superior to Manticore.
I think Mr Weber feels obligated to finish the series, but wrote himself into a corner. This is especially true with his writing for Harrington, as most of those passages feel forced.
The ending is so jarring that I went and checked to ensure the book had completely downloaded.
TLDR - It is OK, but not as good as earlier works.

My whole life is on that phone. I knew I should have backed it up. It's only a few days. Surely, we can handle it.

Useless Artificial Drama - (-3)
The acting is wonderful, the people seem real, the interaction (except when it becomes relationship focused) makes you smile.
If this book were written with the roles reversed, it wouldn't have gotten published. The female lead is every kind of emotional abusive possible and yet, the male lead, who has no reason to put up with it after only knowing her for a couple of days, keeps trying. It reminds me of all those old country songs of the mid-1900's like Stand By Your Man.
Honestly, how many times should anyone put up with someone accusing them of things they aren't guilty of or didn't do and keep coming back?

I got this on a whim because my husband rolled his eyes when I read him the synopsis. I put it on as soon as we started our road trip, and he wouldn't let me listen to it without him. We both loved the character building and look forward to more.

risk taker is a well-written story, the characters are believable the drama isn't artificial and it actually feels believable.
unfortunately, the elements of the story around military protocol are completely fictitious. the author didn't do quite enough research and, as a result, the primary conflict in the story which is the enlisted/officer romance wouldn't actually be a problem in the real world. the reason for this is the fraternization is only a problem when the individuals are in the same chain of command with one in authority over the other.
as a result, you have drama that isn't.
