Awesome as always
Revisado: 05-23-23
This series gets better and better. Yes there are a lot of stats, however, that's consistent with all the other books. The First Defier again delivers an incredible book.

Generally awesome with a caveat
Revisado: 05-23-23
I greatly appreciate the Lost Starship series; however, I find it increasingly wearisome to encounter the frequent inclusion of Bible and Christianity references within the narrative. Given the series' resolute science fiction nature, these religious allusions appear incongruous with the overarching themes and events depicted. As the characters delve deeper into the enigmatic aspects of the universe and its origins, it is only natural for them to question the existence of a creator or similar forces based on the contextual information presented. Regrettably, the author's endeavors to interweave certain characters' references to a Christian God and the Bible feel conspicuously heavy-handed and contrived. This intrusion disrupts the suspension of disbelief and creates the perception that the author is overtly advocating his personal religious convictions, rather than allowing the characters to harbor credible beliefs that arise organically from their respective contexts and circumstances.

Great performance but poor story
Revisado: 01-23-23
Disclaimer, I really enjoyed the Eragon series and wanted to love this book. As a huge sci-fi and fantasy reader with a massive library, I'm generally easy to please and rarely give less than 5 stars to anything.
No spoilers yet
The story starts strong with good and believable Sci-Fi. Easy to maintain suspension of disbelief. After a while, far too much of the plot relies on the reader just accepting that things are happening because the writer says they are. Towards the end of the book massive technological shifts are taking place with paper thin foundations that just aren't believable. The other issue is that the story itself wholly unoriginal.
Minor spoilers below based on inference
Take the Zerg from Starcraft, the Forerunners from Halo, and Venom from Marvel. Mix them in a space opera blender and you would have every major component of the story. I don't expect every book to be completely original. There are far too many ideas and stories that have already been explored. Chances are someone has always already written about something similar. But, that being said, there is not enough uniqueness to the components of this story. It reads like a regurgitation of those other components. When you combine that with the very difficult to maintain suspension of disbelief you end up with a book that feels like it was rushed or lazily written. I've only written the highlights here though. There are numerous other pieces of the story that feel ripped straight out of other Sci-Fi in a lazy way, and countless examples of stuff happening just because the author wrote it in instead of it being driven by the tech or explanations in the story.
Again, I really like Paolini for Eragon. However, I can't justify fanboying for this book written as it is. Somebody needs to review this one critically.

Fantastic conclusion to an awesome saga
Revisado: 06-15-22
I've listened to every book in the ember wars storyline and this was a great final chapter. The book is on the short side but I felt that it covered everything I expected it to and wrapped everything up nicely. Thanks Richard and Luke for an epic good time!

Historia
Execute hard burn. Every good smuggler in the 2990s keeps an emergency flight plan in their back pocket. They call it a Drunkard's Walk, a seemingly random flight path that turns their ship into a pinball when everything goes to hell. Captain Andy Sykes is about to run: from Mars, Ceres, the Jovian Combine, Saturn's moon Kalyke, Titania, and ultimately Proteus, an icy moon of Neptune. He's been implanted with a sentient AI named Lyssa, only now waking to her massive power. Every other Human-AI hybrid has ended in insanity or death.

The narrator whispers through the entire book. Extremely difficult to get past it, even at the end of this (the second book) I still noticed it the entire time.

Historia
Captain Andy Sykes just wants to keep his family in one piece. Once a combat pilot for the TSF, he gave it all up for love and a family. But two years ago, his wife disappeared, leaving him with two mouths to feed: eight-year-old Tim and 10-year-old Cara. Since then, he's managed to scrape a living hauling cargo between the Jovian Combine and InnerSol. When a cargo run to Cruithne Station meets with more than one catastrophe, Andy finds himself accepting an offer a less desperate man would refuse: delivering an illegal AI named Lyssa.

One of the worst narrations I've heard. She whispers through the entire book, not at low volume but in the tone of voice she uses.
