Historia
After being hospitalized for panic attacks two years after his mother’s death, charitable foundation executive Teagan van Zijl is dragged by his sister to a wilderness therapy retreat in Montana. Lost in the woods, Teagan nearly gets eaten by a bear but is saved by an angel in muddy hiking boots—the program’s handywoman, Darcy Albano, that is. After spending the summer with Darcy, Teagan realizes he doesn’t want to return to New York without her.

I didn't finish it
Revisado: 09-13-24
I got this as my free credit during a 2 for 1 sale, and I picked it up because either was being advertised as a rom-com and I felt like I could use something lighthearted. This is NOT lighthearted.
It literally starts with a list of trigger warnings. And both characters are chock full of trauma.
The author has a nice narrative style, though the characters are a little exaggerated perhaps but I got about 10 chapters in and it was 90% doom and gloom with only a few lines that I would actually consider comedy, and I had to give it a pass. It felt like someone tried to mix one of those Christian romances meant to show you the healing power of God with a dark romance (although there wasn't actually any religion in it) and came out with something resembling an awkward lifetime TV movie that can't decide what direction it's going in. Maybe it gets better but it definitely wasn't what I signed up for, though that's more Audible's fault than the author's.

Historia
When Finlay Ashowan joins the staff of the King and Queen of Daxaria, he’s an enigma. No one knows where he comes from or how he came to be where he is, which suits Fin just fine. He’s satisfied simply serving as the royal cook, keeping nosy passersby out of his kitchen, and concocting some truly uncanny meals. But Fin’s secret identity doesn’t stay hidden for long. After all, it’s not every day a house witch and his kitten familiar, Kraken, take to meddling in imperial affairs.

Too long to end on a cliffhanger
Revisado: 12-18-23
The naration is good, the banter is often witty and I was very amused by the sly references to modern/pop culture things in this medieval setting. It was cleverly done.
Having said that, this book is really long for how little happens in it, adding that it ends...not quite on a cliffhanger but certainly on a decidedly unresolved note, I find myself rather annoyed with it. I would say it is the novel equivalent of a soap opera, which is simply not to my taste, and not, to my mind a particularly cozy book, which is what I was looking for. I find myself disappointed overall.
I did consider giving the second one a try since I made it through the first one, but the first review on that one is that it is another cliffhanger. so 17 hours for the 1st one and the second and third are like 13 each. 40+ hours for this story is definitely too much. The author should have had more editing to start with. They have too many pointless threads with the cat, and the opposing kings viewpoints scattered in for no reason. I mean the cat part was cute, but considering the length, something needs to go.

I couldn't finish it
Revisado: 06-20-23
It might be interesting enough for a free read, but I couldn't get past the weird narration. The voices were awful, weird pauses between words made it hard to focus. And I couldn't keep the characters straight. The main character seemed to flip flop between good girl and bad girl in an odd way that made it seem like the author didn't know what she was doing.

Concerned that technology is about to chase mythological creatures out into the open (how long can Sasquatch stay hidden from Google maps?), the League for Interspecies Cooperation is sending Jillian to Louisiana on a fact-finding mission. While the League hopes to hold on to secrecy for a little bit longer, they're preparing for the worst in terms of human reactions. They need a plan, so they look to Mystic Bayou, a tiny town hidden in the swamp where humans and supernatural residents have been living in harmony for generations.

Entertaining story-weird narration
Revisado: 05-13-22
This isn't great literature, but it is a fairly entertaining story written in an amusing way. I definitely laughed out loud a couple of times. The POV alternates between the two main characters, and each time it does the narrator changes to suit, but what I found weird about it is that the actor reading for the Male POV also voices the female hero in those chapters, and the woman voices the man's in her's. It's awkward and makes it feel a little disjointed. It also makes keeping track of other characters a little difficult as the two actors voice those characters differently. I don't understand why they would go to the trouble of having multiple readers and use them this way.

Historia
Eff was born a thirteenth child. Her twin brother, Lan, is the seventh son of a seventh son. This means he's supposed to possess amazing talent - and she's supposed to bring only bad things to her family and her town. Undeterred, her family moves to the frontier, where her father will be a professor of magic at a school perilously close to the magical divide that separates settlers from the beasts of the wild. With wit and wonder, Patricia Wrede creates an alternate history of westward expansion that will delight fans of both J. K. Rowling and Laura Ingalls Wilder.

Phryne Fisher is doing one of her favorite things -dancing at the Green Mill (Melbourne's premier dance hall) to the music of Tintagel Stone's Jazzmakers, the band who taught St Vitus how to dance. And she's wearing a sparkling lobelia-coloured georgette dress. Nothing can flap the unflappable Phryne -especially on a dance floor with so many delectable partners. Nothing except death, that is.

A fun look into 1920s jazz
Revisado: 02-21-19
I really love the tone of the Phrynie books. There is this wonderful sense of balance to the character's manners, logic, and sense of justice. This book also has a lovely sense of mood, balancing the horrors of the Great War with the jovial party of the jazz scene

Historia
Austen wrote, 'I am going to take a heroine whom no-one but myself will much like' and thus introduces the handsome, clever, rich - and flawed, Emma Woodhouse. Emma is perfectly content with her life and sees no need for either love or marriage; nothing however delights her more than matchmaking her fellow residents of Highbury. But when she ignores the warnings of her good friend Mr. Knightley and attempts to arrange a suitable match for her protegee Harriet Smith, her carefully laid plans soon unravel and have consequences that she never expected.

Entertaining
Revisado: 01-02-19
This free book was entertaining in the way that Gweneth Paltrow's Emma was entertaining, while largely true to the story, the adaptation loses some of the flavor of Austin's language that uas mad eit such a classic. This was somewhat softened by the talent of the speakers, and Emma Thompson's experience with such classic works gave some of it back in her tone as narrator but I cant help but feel that it lacks the sheer genius that uas made Jane Austin's otherwise pedestrian works survive.

It seems a little disorganized
Revisado: 11-29-18
At first I thought this was trying to be gothic, but then it was more like a full out horror story, but then it was never really scary. The transitions were a little too rough, and some of the pauses were weird. I'm not sure if that was the author or the narrator. Overall the story had a lot of unrealized potential, but it never really managed to show any of it off. There was no history, no reason, and no real resolution. It was just kinda meh.
