Very brief
Revisado: 03-29-21
A very brief and interesting history of this time period. I had a few issues with some of the things peppered in that made me Question things. I also had an issue with it at the very end during the battle of New Orleans. I do not know if it was an error of the voiceover artist or the authors but it states that there were 7500 British troops in 50 ships that attacked New Orleans and that there were 16,000 American troops defending it. However the end result was 12,000 British soldiers killed including the commander of the forces. This number is inconsistent with the earlier number of British troops of 7500. Again, since it was an audiobook I do not know if it was an error with the authors or the voiceover artist.

Harun al-Rashid: The Life and Legacy of the Abbasid Caliph During the Islamic Golden Age

Historia
Like many historical figures, Harun al-Rashid’s biography has become part reality and part myth. A real individual and the fourth caliph of the Abbasid Caliphate, Harun al-Rashid is best known to many individuals because of his role in famous literature like One Thousand and One Nights, not necessarily because of his policy decisions. This is unusual because Harun al-Rashid was perhaps the most influential of the Abbasid caliphs due to his role in bringing economic prosperity.

Revisado: 01-02-21
Very general. Was hoping for more details about Harun al-Rashid but unfortunately half of the book was a history of the caliphate and Islamic history in general, which was interesting but I was hoping for more information on al-Rashad. Good overall but very short.

Historia
Almost all accounts of D-Day are told from the Allied perspective, with the emphasis on how German resistance was overcome on June 6, 1944. But what was it like to be a German soldier in the bunkers and gun emplacements of the Normandy coast, facing the onslaught of the mightiest seaborne invasion in history? What motivated the German defenders, what were their thought processes - and how did they fight from one strong point to another, among the dunes and fields, on that first cataclysmic day?

A one sided view of the Sunni Shia split
Revisado: 08-16-18
I got this book because it was on the commandant’s reading list. I was very surprised it made the list. A very one sided view of the Sunni Shia split. It was more like a “based on a true story” book. A lot of assumptions are made without any facts. Not to mention the anti-West rhetoric towards the end. Not a very objective read. If you’re looking for more fact based information on the subject, look elsewhere.

Historia
The Middle East is a critically important area of our world. And, with its current prominence in international affairs, media images of the Middle East reach us on a daily basis. Much media coverage, however, is incomplete at best, failing to take account of either the complexities or the historical background of this pivotal region. For most of us, the real story of the Middle East remains untold. What made this crucial geopolitical area what it is today?

Unfortunately Subjective
Revisado: 07-09-18
Why is it so difficult to find objective writing regarding Islam or Middle Eastern history in general? I was so bummed at how subjective this course is. Too much of ‘well the Christians and Jews did it too’ type of talk. I just want to know the good, the bad, and the ugly about the history of Islam. The more I study about this topic the more I realize that I’m better off going directly to the primary sources. Overall this course was a serious let down. I love the topic and there were some good facts mentioned, however, these lectures only scratch the surface of everything. Gearon does have a good voice for narration and it isn’t flat. I could listen to his lectures and not get bored.

Historia
In 1307, as they struggled to secure their last strongholds in the Kingdom of Jerusalem, the Templars fell afoul of the vindictive and impulsive king of France. On Friday, October 13, hundreds of brothers were arrested en masse, imprisoned, tortured, and disbanded amid accusations of lurid sexual misconduct and heresy. They were tried by the Vatican in secret proceedings. But were they heretics or victims of a ruthlessly repressive state?

Historia
Scholars, journalists, and politicians uphold Muslim-ruled medieval Spain - "al-Andalus" - as a multicultural paradise, a place where Muslims, Christians, and Jews lived in harmony. There is only one problem with this widely accepted account: It is a myth. In this groundbreaking book, Northwestern University scholar Darío Fernández-Morera tells the full story of Islamic Spain. As professors, politicians, and pundits continue to celebrate Islamic Spain for its "multiculturalism" and "diversity", Fernández-Morera sets the record straight.
