Historia
Dombey and Son is vintage Dickens and explores the classic themes of betrayal, cruelty and deceit. Dombey's dysfunctional relationships are painted against a backdrop of social unrest in industrialized London, which is populated by a host of fascinating and memorable secondary characters. The complete and unabridged novel is brought spectacularly to life by veteran reader David Timson.

Great narrator for undeservedly forgotten Dickens
Revisado: 03-26-12
I love all things Dickens, so it's no wonder I enjoyed this. This narrator is just gorgeous. He absolutely brought this book to life. Captain Cuttle became a most beloved and alive human with Timson's voice. Wonderful, wonderful job.
About the book itself. This is a very underrated Dickens novel that probably deserves some modern eyes to see & modern ears to hear. Of course, as is characteristic of Dickens, this book rounds itself out and works all the bits and pieces to a satisfactory ending, but not always in the way we thought we wanted or in the timeframe we expected. It is a gorgeous story full of heart and timeless themes.

There is no finer way to welcome young people (or adults!) to the pleasures of Shakespeare than with these four masterful retellings of the Bard's most beloved plays. Ranging from the pure magic of A Midsummer Night's Dream to the heartbreak of young love in Romeo and Juliet, featuring the spine-tingling tragedy of Macbeth (complete with ghost and witches) and culminating in the laugh-out-loud hijinks of Twelfth Night.

Wonderful adaptations of Shakespeare for children
Revisado: 03-26-12
Bruce Coville does a wonderful job at adapting these four Shakespearean greats for children. You can get them as story/illustrated books as well, they are fantastic.
Two of the plays are told by one narrator, the other two use a full cast for characters. Both ways were fun, but the full cast definitely adds a lot of charm.
I watched a group of 11-14 year old kids listen to this version of "Twelfth Night" to familiarize them with the storyline in preparation for performing the play. I loved watching them laugh and really "get" the plot, humor & all of it. Twelfth Night is one of the "full cast" productions and it is really full of humor. Duke Orsino is so well played, whiny, silly love-sick voice and all.
I would definitely suggest this audio and/or the accompanying books as introductions to Shakespeare.

Historia
"There is a disease that can twist men's hearts and make them mad, and the name of that disease is jealousy." So begins this engaging retelling of one of William Shakespeare's last plays - a fascinating and unique combination of intensity and whimsy. When King Leontes unfairly accuses his wife of infidelity, he sets off a terrible chain of events. But this is not one of Shakespeare's tragedies. It's a romance, and one with a healthy dose of fancy and surprise.

Great intro to Shakespeare for kids

What did you love best about William Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale?
This is an adaptation for children (or people generally unfamiliar with Shakespeare). Coville always does a nice job at maintaining the feel of the story while cutting out some of the things that might be over the top for a child. (Check out his
What about A. C. Fellner’s performance did you like?
He did a great job. His voice was perfect for the poor, deluded king.
