Historia
Christian Beamish, a former editor at The Surfer's Journal, envisioned a low-tech, self-reliant exploration for surf along the coast of North America, using primarily clothes and instruments available to his ancestors, and the 18-foot boat he would build by hand in his garage. How the vision met reality - and how the two came to shape each other - places The Voyage of the Cormorant in the great American tradition of tales of life at sea, and what it has to teach us.

Dare big dreams
Revisado: 05-05-24
Author Christian Beamish has the guts to hoist the sails on a dream, and what a treasure to be invited along on this literary journey. Concise and attentive detail for things both physical and internal, brings this adventure to life.
I know the Baja, have surfed the points, have paddled to Cedros and back. Cristian’s writing rings absolutely true.

Historia
When Catherine Raven finished her PhD in biology, she built herself a tiny cottage on an isolated plot of land in Montana. She was as emotionally isolated as she was physically, but she viewed the house as a way station, a temporary rest stop where she could gather her nerves and fill out applications for what she hoped would be a real job that would help her fit into society. In the meantime, she taught remotely and led field classes in nearby Yellowstone National Park. Then one day she realized that a mangy-looking fox was showing up on her property every afternoon at 4:15 p.m.

Natural, not normal
Revisado: 12-01-23
For lovers of the natural world who’ve been subject to the tyranny of “normal” Fox and I is a breath of fresh air. Yes, let us be natural and let the whole concept of normal be recycled in smoke.
This story is an enlightening, intimate and creative immersion in a particular hillside. It’s both a realization of self, and a love story with the natural world.

What happens when you realize you’ve had the career of your dreams, but you don’t have the life of your dreams? This was the stark reality facing Sheri Salata when she left her 20-year stint at The Oprah Winfrey Show, Harpo Studios, and the OWN network. She had dedicated decades to her dream job, and loved (almost) every minute of it, but had left the rest of her life gathering dust on the shelf. After years of telling other people’s makeover stories, Sheri decided to “produce” her own life transformation.

The beautiful invitation to reflect and dream
Revisado: 10-11-23
Candor, vulnerability, and guts. As well as the ability to weave a really good story. Where do you take it as the tail of another interesting human, or an invitation and inspiration to grow, this book is worth a listen!

Historia
Since the dawn of recorded history, humans have felt a kinship with the sleek and beautiful dolphin, an animal whose playfulness, sociability, and intelligence seem like an aquatic mirror of mankind. In recent decades, we have learned that dolphins recognize themselves in reflections, count, grieve, adorn themselves, feel despondent, rescue one another (and humans), deduce, infer, seduce, form cliques, throw tantrums, and call themselves by name.

Historia
For centuries, mariners have spun tales of gargantuan waves, 100-feet high or taller. Until recently scientists dismissed these stories - waves that high would seem to violate the laws of physics. But in the past few decades, as a startling number of ships vanished and new evidence has emerged, oceanographers realized something scary was brewing in the planet’s waters. They found their proof in February 2000, when a British research vessel was trapped in a vortex of impossibly mammoth waves in the North Sea - including several that approached 100 feet.

Candy for sea-lovers
Revisado: 09-27-23
Other than hearing “knots per hour” used as a measure of speed (knots measure speed, knots per hour measure acceleration), and the canoe from which Eddie Aikau swam to his death called an outrigger (it was Hokulea, the replica voyaging canoe that inspired the Polynesian renaissance), I thoroughly enjoyed The Wave.
Lyrical descriptions. Wide ranging research. Personal connections with interesting people. Firsthand experiences poetically and heartfully shared.
I am a paddler, surfer, and blue water sailor and appreciated the knowledge and perspectives The Wave offers. I found myself searching for a storyline before accepting that, much like a wave, this book is simply an experience to be lived and savored.

Millions of people visit xkcd.com each week to read Randall Munroe's iconic webcomic. His stick-figure drawings about science, technology, language, and love have a large and passionate following. Fans of xkcd ask Munroe a lot of strange questions. What if you tried to hit a baseball pitched at 90 percent of the speed of light? How fast can you hit a speed bump while driving and live? If there were a robot apocalypse, how long would humanity last?
