Historia
Maria Bamford is a creative genius. But the process of creating is not something that “comes easily” or “is enjoyable” for her. So, over the years, she’s invented a number of helpful techniques for tricking, shaming, coercing herself into doing things. You Are (A Comedy) Special is 15-step comedic send up of a self help guide that examines Maria’s approach to stand-up in a hilarious fashion.

She’s always so good
Revisado: 11-24-23
I loved this. I kind of wish I could get exactly this but for my desired career. Even though she’s talking about how to be a comic (which I would never want to attempt) it’s so funny and kind and generous as she always is.

Historia
Amanda and Clay head to a remote corner of Long Island expecting a holiday: a quiet reprieve from life in New York City, quality time with their teenage son and daughter and a taste of the good life in the luxurious home they've rented for the week. But with a late-night knock on the door, the spell is broken. Ruth and G. H., an older couple who claim to own the home, have arrived there in a panic. These strangers say that a sudden power outage has swept the city, and - with nowhere else to turn - they have come to the country in search of shelter.

Unrelenting misery
Revisado: 11-04-23
I don’t know about this book. I get she wrote it before Covid and she masterfully managed to show some terrifying parallels. But it was just so unrelenting. So hopeless and in the end it felt pointless. I dragged myself to finish it hoping for some light but alas.

Historia
An unmatched guide to the religious dimensions of American politics, Jeff Sharlet journeys into corners of our national psyche where others fear to tread. The Undertow is both inquiry and meditation, an attempt to understand how, over the last decade, reaction has morphed into delusion, social division into distrust, distrust into paranoia, and hatred into fantasies—sometimes realities—of violence.

Extraordinary portrait of a confusing country
Revisado: 06-26-23
At first I thought this was a series of essays he’d collected into this one book. It isn’t. The chapters speak to each other about the horrors they are unveiling. The authors beautiful, poetic writing (and reading) style help to soothe you as you read how America is curdling into a horrific brew of misery. But don’t despair, there’s always hope shining through a strange little character or moment in each story.
This is an amazing portrait. I hope many people read it

This book is perfection. Just get it. Seriously. It’s impossible to describe and the plot isn’t really the point. The writing is breathtaking and the characters will become friends. Just get it. I miss it already and I only just finished it.

And the point was...?
Revisado: 08-15-19
I have found myself too often feeling deflated and mystified by the actual point of the story when it comes to Oates’ work.
This story is about a deeply unlikeable family treating each other terribly and then having pretty crappy lives. I don’t get it. What did the main character learn in her life other than all men are evil apparently?? Narration was fine.

deeply silly and pointless book
Revisado: 09-28-15
Seriously?! What's everyone raving about?
Spoilers ahead.
Lame 'love' story that really just isn't. A plot twist that is flimsy and pointless. Character development was woeful and unoriginal.
I kept waiting for it to turn into something, for her to become something other than a sad little rich girl who's dad was a twit. It was so disappointing.

Historia
A brilliant and utterly original thinker, Andrew Solomon's journey began from his experience of being the gay child of straight parents. He wondered how other families accommodate children who have a variety of differences: families of people who are deaf, who are dwarfs, who have Down syndrome, who have autism, who have schizophrenia, who have multiple severe disabilities, who are prodigies, who commit crimes, who are transgender.

Revisado: 03-18-15
I loved this book so much. It's one of the only books where I said, 'oh darn, there's only 13 hours of this book left!!'.
Read beautifully by the author, it's written so well, encompassing a massive range of parental experiences. He has genuine compassion and empathy for these parents and their children. It's a deeply moving and humbling book. JUST GET IT.

SOOOOOOO STUPID!
Revisado: 03-06-13
I am clearly not the target audience for this book. It's a cliche of action/adventure. Lots of guns, hot chicks and hard men. Seriously. I don't understand the appeal.
If you enjoy endless descriptions of weaponry and gunfights go for it. I could barely finish it.

Not Gone Girl but still great.
Revisado: 03-06-13
I still enjoyed this. It was a well done whodunit with an edge. Flynn is EXPERT at drawing acid tongued, vile women and there is a plethora of them in this fast paced, edgy book.
I was NOT a fan of the reader. She sounds WAY too old! The girl in this book is in her early thirties and this reader sounds much older.
It was good, but very different from Gone Girl, which I LOVED, and wanted another one of course. This is very different, but still great.

We the Living portrays the impact of the Russian Revolution on three people who demand the right to live their own lives. At its center is a girl whose passionate love is her fortress against the cruelty and oppression of a totalitarian state. Rand said of this book: "It is as near to an autobiography as I will ever write."
