Historia
On a hot July night on Cape Cod when Adrienne was 14, her mother, Malabar, woke her at midnight with five simple words that would set the course of both of their lives for years to come: Ben Souther just kissed me. Adrienne instantly became her mother’s confidante and helpmate, blossoming in the sudden light of her attention, and from then on, Malabar came to rely on her daughter to help orchestrate what would become an epic affair with her husband’s closest friend.

Impactful
Revisado: 05-17-20
I happened upon this book as I was looking for my next ‘listen’. I’m not sure why I chose this particular book and had few expectations.
The expression “truth is stranger than fiction” applies here. The story is a strange one. It is a cautionary tale about how a quick decision can impact your life and how cloudy our perspective can become as we navigate our lives.
The descriptions in the book are beautifully written and naturally done. The narrator was excellent and did not get in the way of the story at all. I enjoyed the discussion between author and narrator after the ending of the book. I thought that was a great addition and supplied that extra assurance that the story, as well as the author, was real.
Kudos to the author for finding her path and for writing this book which has had an impact on me.

Historia
On March 16, 2018, just 26 hours before his scheduled retirement from the organization he had served with distinction for more than two decades, Andrew G. McCabe was fired from his position as deputy director of the FBI. President Donald Trump celebrated on Twitter: "Andrew McCabe FIRED, a great day for the hard working men and women of the FBI - A great day for Democracy." In The Threat: How the FBI Protects America in the Age of Terror and Trump, Andrew G. McCabe offers a dramatic and candid account of his career and an impassioned defense of the FBI.

This book is clearly written and well read by the author. It gives an account of how the FBI performs its duties and also clears up, in my mind, the events leading to and beyond the 2016 election and the accompanying investigations. I want to thank Andrew McCabe for his service to our nation, his integrity, and for writing this book.

Racism in our country is an essential discussion in current times. When President Obama was elected, I cried tears of joy at that milestone in our country. In the eight years since then, there have been too many heartbreaking incidents that have revealed the inherent racism that persists. The author did her readers a service by bringing some of the personal struggles that arise from racism to light. The story and the performance were well done. I appreciated the various points of view that were presented.

Lucidly and beautifully written, Peace Is Every Step contains commentaries, meditations, personal anecdotes, and stories from Nhat Hanh's experiences as a peace activist, teacher, and community leader. It begins where the listener already is - in the kitchen, office, driving a car, walking - and shows how deep meditative presence is available now.

Historia
Rose Howard has OCD, Asperger's syndrome, and an obsession with homonyms (even her name is a homonym). She gave her dog Rain a name with two homonyms (Reign, Rein), which, according to Rose's rules of homonyms, is very special. Rain was a lost dog Rose's father brought home. Rose and Rain are practically inseparable. And they are often home alone, as Rose's father spends most evenings at a bar, and doesn't have much patience for his special-needs daughter.

I'm a teacher and chose to listen to this book because I wanted to gain some insight.
When I began listening to this story, I perceived of it as a straightforward demonstration of the thought process of a 5th grader with Aspergers and OCD.
At first, I found all that homonym spelling to be mildly annoying and didn't know if I would want to keep listening. I'm glad I did. Before long, I warmed up to Rose and was drawn into her preoccupation with homonyms, numbers, and rules.
As the story proceeded, there was humor which was enhanced, in my opinion, by the narrator's performance. She was successful in demonstrating Rose's anxiety without going over the top.
By the time I neared the ending, I was aware of the many issues which were touched upon in this story; the great power of pets to reach out to people and bring them together, the lingering effects of abuse, questions of morality, bravery, empathy, and how people show love in different ways.
I was seeking insight from this book and got more than expected into a variety of issues. Good book for teens, good book for adults.

Historia
Dan-el Padilla Peralta has lived the American dream. As a boy he came here legally with his family. Together they left Santo Domingo behind, but life in New York City was harder than they imagined. Their visas lapsed, and Dan-el's father returned home. But Dan-el's courageous mother was determined to make a better life for her bright sons. Undocumented is a classic story of the triumph of the human spirit. It also is the perfect cri de coeur for the debate on comprehensive immigration reform.

This voice humanizes an American reality. Relevant right now in 2016!
Revisado: 02-27-16
I loved listening to this story. It was essential that the writer, the one who was sharing his experiences, was the voice that told the story. He was able to reveal the different stages of his maturity through his tone and vernacular. That ability, for me, brought authenticity to the telling. There was an honesty expressed that brought me close to this young man.
As I write this review, it is the last week in February of 2016. This story could not be more relevant, as the issue of undocumented residents is argued by politicians daily, often in crude and dehumanizing terms. The author humanizes this issue in a powerful way.
No matter what your opinion is on this issue, listening to this book will broaden your perspective and bring greater understanding. In addition, it is a good story about individuality, adaptability, and perseverance. I highly recommend listening to this book.

Historia
With courage, grace, and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of World War II and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women's war. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France—a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.

Loved this book
Revisado: 07-04-15
I enjoy being transported to a different time and place and this book took me to 17th century Iran. The story was inspiring to me on several levels. The journey and hardships of the main character transcend time and place and can be identified with by today's reader. The subplot of rug making was informative but also highlighted the value of artistic creativity. The personalities and motives of the characters were universal.
The narrator was excellent and added to the exotic beauty of the story by her accent while maintaining clarity.
Now I am off to study about Iranian history, look at and discover more about Persian rugs and rug making, and look for more books by this author.

This story was very engaging while reminding the reader about the culture in our country vis a vis civil rights in the early 1960's. I found the use of language to be very charming as I did the life lessons which emerged. The narrator was exceptional. I highly recommend this audiobook.

Historia
Shyima Hall was born in Egypt on September 29, 1989, the seventh child of desperately poor parents. When she was eight, her parents sold her into slavery. Shyima then moved two hours away to Egypt's capitol city of Cairo to live with a wealthy family and serve them eighteen hours a day, seven days a week. When she was ten, her captors moved to Orange County, California, and smuggled Shyima with them. Two years later, an anonymous call from a neighbor brought about the end of Shyima's servitude - but her journey to true freedom was far from over.

Opened my eyes
Revisado: 01-28-15
I was aware of the term "human trafficking, but this book opened my eyes to the implications of what that meant for one person and, as I now understand, many thousands. Before I happened upon this book, I interpreted human trafficking to mainly refer to people held for sexual purposes, but I now understand more fully what the term implies.
This story is told in a simple and relatable manner. It reveals an indomitable human spirit which I truly found uplifting. It left me hoping that if I ever encounter an individual in that circumstance, I might be able to recognize it and help that person. Shyima, I wish you the very best. You deserve it.
