The mystical green planet of Rendaz is home to devout goddess worshiper and university professor, middle-aged Beautimus Potamus - who also happens to be a hippo plagued by hot flashes and poor self-esteem. Beautimus forms an alliance with Samuel S. Goodwings, a younger womanizing, atheist praying mantis. When these two are together, life morphs from the mundane into the fantastic. Our unlikely duo solve mysteries, bring a murderer to justice, and even help end a war, while experiencing their own trials, triumphs, and tragedies.

Excellent narration and unforgettable characters.
Revisado: 02-06-18
I have found it difficult to write a review of this novel. The ratings for Overall, Performance, and Story don't tell the full tale of this book. The characters and world that Peggy Wheeler have established here are relatable and interesting. I felt, by the end, that I truly knew all of the members of the cast. The narration did such a fantastic job differentiating between each character's voice that I never wondered who was speaking.
What Wheeler has developed here is a fascinating character study. Each section of the novel feels like an individual short story or novella about Beautimus rather than part of a novel. There's very little narrative arc to move the reader from one story to another. Though the end does come together quite nicely, everything leading up to the final act felt largely disconnected - more like an anthology than a novel.
Overall though, the narration, the characters, and the strange beauty of this novel felt truly unique and enjoyable, and I'm quite glad to have had the opportunity to read it.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Historia
For a thousand years the ash fell and no flowers bloomed. For a thousand years the Skaa slaved in misery and lived in fear. For a thousand years the Lord Ruler, the "Sliver of Infinity," reigned with absolute power and ultimate terror, divinely invincible. Then, when hope was so long lost that not even its memory remained, a terribly scarred, heart-broken half-Skaa rediscovered it in the depths of the Lord Ruler's most hellish prison.

You're In For A Treat
Revisado: 12-19-17
The Final Empire is the first audibook I ever listened to. Huddled under my blankets in a hotel room, sick out of my mind, I downloaded The Final Empire. I honestly don't know if I could have picked a better novel for my first choice. Everything about this novel and its performance is perfect for the format. Brandon Sanderson's writing is evocative and exciting, painting a rich picture while letting my imagination fill in the details. Michael Kramer's narration is spot on in every novel he narrates. His character voices are distinct and unforgettable. And the story? The setting? The characters? Well, the wonder, adventure, magic, suspense, twists and turns awaiting you in The Final Empire are frankly among my favorites in any fantasy novel I have ever read. If you're looking for an introduction to Sanderson's novels, you can't do much better. And if you're sick as a dog and need something to keep you awake on your 12 hour drive - well, I survived to tell the tale, so I'd say that's a pretty strong endorsement as well.

Surprisingly Effective Thriller
Revisado: 12-19-17
If you could sum up Orphan X in three words, what would they be?
Exciting, Action-Packed Thriller.
What other book might you compare Orphan X to and why?
The easy comparison to this book would be something like The Bourne Identity, but I kept thinking of Drive and The Hunter while reading it. The intro mentions Dexter and the Punisher, and I can definitely see where this novel has taken inspiration from these characters as well.
Any additional comments?
I was pleasantly surprised by this novel. It's a quick read that feels paced similarly to a television show, with many built in cliffhangers and shockers. It doesn't feel particularly important; the novel certainly didn't challenge me emotionally or intellectually. But sometimes that's exactly what you're looking for.
