"It's complicated."
Revisado: 06-05-17
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Fewer annoying characters and a less incredible plot. The Emma character was especially irritating: a self-absorbed whiner. I had trouble understanding the other characters' empathy for her. And, I thought if I heard "It's complicated" one more time, I'd run screaming into the night.
What do you think your next listen will be?
More crime fiction
What does Dick Hill bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
He's an excellent narrator; I've listened to many of his books. To me, the spoken story is superior to the merely read one.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Sam Purdy's wry humor.
Any additional comments?
Mr. White should return to writing about quirky Mormons. Much better novel fodder there...

Only one quibble...
Revisado: 05-09-16
What made the experience of listening to Boy's Life the most enjoyable?
Being a native Alabamian who grew up in the 1960's.
What other book might you compare Boy's Life to and why?
I haven't read anything else quite like it. It's almost a fantasy at times.
Which scene was your favorite?
When Old Leatherlungs was glued to the desk and chair.
If you could rename Boy's Life, what would you call it?
Wouldn't. It's perfectly named.
Any additional comments?
My one quibble: Anyone reading a book set in Alabama and mentioning Bear Bryant and the University of Alabama should know how to pronounce Tuscaloosa. I'm sure Coach is spinning in his grave at the sound of Tusk-ah-lah'-sah.

Historia
From the best-selling author of The Handmaid's Tale and The Testaments - one of Margaret Atwood’s most unforgettable characters lurks at the center of this intricate novel like a spider in a web. The glamorous, irresistible, unscrupulous Zenia is nothing less than a fairy-tale villain in the memories of her former friends. Roz, Charis, and Tony - university classmates decades ago - were reunited at Zenia’s funeral and have met monthly for lunch ever since, obsessively retracing the destructive swath she once cut through their lives.

So, what's the so-called point?
Revisado: 08-17-14
What would have made The Robber Bride better?
Brighter, less gullible protagonists, and a better plot. The main characters I couldn't have cared less about. They made me want to shake them sillly, or slap some sense into them. And, I slogged through the 20-plus hours to see what the point was, only to find none.
Has The Robber Bride turned you off from other books in this genre?
Definitely. I have always enjoyed Atwood's fantasy/futuristic-style books, but this didn't even seem like her work.
What didn’t you like about Bernadette Dunne’s performance?
It was okay. I suppose my dislike for the characters colored my response to her somewhat.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
A waste of my time.

Southern accents are best left to Southerners...
Revisado: 04-21-14
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, for the story. I like suspense and complicated relationships.
What didn’t you like about Dick Hill’s performance?
With the notable exception of the late, great Frank Muller, Southern accents are best left to native Southerners and British actors. I cringed each time I heard Nah'-chez' instead of Natch'-iz, and could'-sue' instead of cud'-zoo. I have always liked Dick Hill's performances, but I far prefer his Jack Reacher-type voice to this one.
Any additional comments?
I had planned to listen the rest of the books in this series, but I'm not sure I'll be able to get around the accent. I know whereof I speak; I am from south Alabama.
