Steve Gleason is an admirable individual. His foundations (Team Gleason and Answer ALS) have done and continue to do wonderful things for people living with ALS, and to help make real a future wherein the disease can be treated or cured. It would be easy to sugar coat and speak in platitudes when relaying his story. But just as his eponymous documentary "Gleason" did, this book takes an unvarnished look at the good, the bad, and everything in between. As much as he and his team have to work extremely hard to keep him physically alive, Steve also wrestles with the mental and emotional challenges of the disease and it's long-tail effects on his family relationships and sense of self in a deep and disarming way. It's like a heightened version of many of the questions we all ask ourselves—but seen through the lens of someone who is facing a terminal diagnosis yet determined to live a life filled with meaning. I was fortunate enough to attend the Congressional Gold Medal Ceremony in early 2020 where Steve was quite deservingly honored with arguably the most exclusive award that can be given to an American citizen. His presence—and that of his family—was something to behold. Reading or listening to this book, you will go on a roller coaster of emotion and be reminded of the fact—as Steve notes in the book—that not one of us gets out of this life alive. So we owe it to ourselves and those around us to work hard every day to be the best version of ourselves. Steve quotes a poignant song lyric in the book: "The greatest thing you'll ever learn Is just to love And be loved In return." His life and work are a lesson in doing just that through the most unimaginable circumstances.

This is an excellent book. I am a 20+ year veteran of various creative fields including motion design and film and tv production. It's challenging. It's volatile. It's often lonely. it can be very difficult to find a bearing and maintain steady progress. This book gives actual advice you can use—actionable steps and self-audits that you can do in a few minutes or a few hours. It's not just platitudes like so many professional development books. Looking forward to listening to the followup book.
