not the gangster tales I look for from Cole. Also Lisa Coleman reads like storytime. not convincing. much prefer Annie Aldington but even she couldn't have made this book enjoyable. other than dying, nothing ever happens to the loathsome central character

Historia
The gripping story of life on the inside and the outside of one of Britain's toughest prisons. Donna Brunos worships her husband and is devastated when he is jailed for armed robbery. Georgio swears he's been set up and persuades Donna to help him escape. Implementing 'the jump' takes Donna into a twilight world she never believed existed - a world of brutal sex and casual violence.

Annie Aldington is the BEST
Revisado: 12-12-16
Would you consider the audio edition of The Jump to be better than the print version?
I love Annie's range on accents. Though, her scottish was a bit of a let down. Anyhoo, she is by far the best narrator Audible has. The only bit I didn't like fully about this book is the unsavoury part of the plot which I will not spoil for others. It made it difficult to get through some parts and I probably won't listen to this book again. I mean I finished it because I needed to know how it all turned out. BUT i normally re listen to Martina/Annie books a few times in case I missed something and for entertainment value. But because of the aforementioned unsavoury element of the plot, I can't re-listen to this one. I really had hoped that Donna would have done something better with the money... you know?
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
Donna should have used the money as a sanctuary or other sort of foundation for the victims.
What does Annie Aldington bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Emotion

Much better than Janet Song
Revisado: 12-03-14
What did you love best about China Dolls?
I'm so pleased the reader is different. I found it really difficult to listen to Janet Song on Lisa's other recordings. It always sounded as if she was reading with a jawbreaker and a lot of saliva in her mouth. As to comments about Lisa's accent, I don't hear it so I have no complaints. The only times I hear 'an accent' is when she's reading 'Ruby' as her interpretation of that character's 'streetwise' nature means she's got this 1920's, Chicago type attitude. Anyhoo, it was fine with me. The only thing I'd comment against her is that I found her 'voices' for a character changed when narrating as another character. I've read and listened to most of Lisa's books.
I love reading Lisa's historical fiction. It's not over dramatised and has enough interesting facts and details to peak both the non-fiction reader in me. Still, her best book for me will always be Snow Flower and the Secret Fan in that respect.
