I absolutely loved this narration and enjoyed the story. It was unlike anything else I’ve listened to or read. Highly recommend. You won’t be disappointed.

What I loved about this book is that it was like nothing else I’ve ever experienced on audible. The author along with Flame Monroe are nothing short of sublime. I mean just amazing! If you can get beyond the quirky nature of this narration and storytelling, you will see that Hannaham is brilliantly peeling back layers of a complicated slice of life that we rarely think about. Traumas, resilience, gentrification, poverty, racism, misogyny, and so much more. I loved the characters and especially the protagonist. Carlotta in her one shoe makes you want to just take on life and give it all you have. I would highly recommend this book for so many reasons. I am a narrator snob and, best of all, this narration is just one of the very best I’ve heard. Loved it.

This book didn't disappoint. I loved the integration of interviews and actual audio clips. Some of the stories required me to rewind since they were rather complicated in detail. Specifically the parts about military operations. Overall though, it was really well done and made me think. I'd recommend it although it isn't my favorite by this author.

I cannot find enough words to praise the elegant, believable performance of Sissy Spacek reading this classic. This was a book I’d read before yet hearing her as Scout gave it an entirely different feel. I loved it so much and cried when it ended. The beautiful notes of this story, the bravery and innocence of Scout, the allegiance of Jem, and especially the understated goodness of Atticus made my heart soar. I will listen to this again. This may be one of my favorite narrations to date—and I listen to MANY books. So, so perfect. Thank you, Sissy!

OMG. I did NOT like this at ALL. The reviews were so positive for this that I immediately purchased it. Though I am a fan of Ms. Lewis, here is why I really, really, really didn't enjoy this book:

1. It was unnecessarily name-droppy and self important. I imagined hearing of celebrities but just the way she shares it is completely annoying.

2. It isn't as much a memoir as it is a performance. She's dramatic in places that don't call for it. I was looking forward to a down to earth insight into her journey. Instead it was a hyperdramatic monologue about who she had sex with and how she is amazing. It was odd, man.

3. It isn't fluid or really chronological. Her history of mental illness comes through--it reads so manic. There are these unnecessary detours that don't fit the story line. She's all over the place. Gregory Hines suckling her breast backstage to having sex with an Italian man in an elevator. Then it just sort of goes to something else. None of it makes sense. And the melodramatic read of it all grated on me. I kept having to shut it off.

4. I listen to audible a lot. I am a 47 year old college-educated black woman who celebrates black women and the arts often. It does make me happy that her book has been a success and that I could support another sister. Again, I'm a fan of Lewis and her work and love a good memoir. But this one absolutely disappointed me and, in my opinion, was terrible. I cannot believe the reviews are so good. I hated it.

I am still a fan of Ms. Lewis, the performer. Just not of her book. At all. Hated it.

I loved this story. So complex and with characters that felt real—especially since I attended a historically black college. The ONLY thing that I really, really didn’t enjoy was when Sean Crisden, the male narrator, spoke as Celestial (the wife.) I couldn’t stand the somber, exaggerated drag queen voice he used. Uggh!!! So much of the dialogue involved that voice that it made me dislike her character. Then when Eisa Davis would come in, i reembraced her character. I have no idea what they could have done to avoid that. Otherwise his other voices were brilliant. I kind of wished I’d read it on Kindle. I reeeeeally disliked that male Celestial voice!

This narration was probably the very best I've ever heard. It was sublime. Prentice Onayemi so elegantly navigates over 5 different accents including a soothing narrator voice that flows as smooth as a river. The subtleties of the Cameroonian accent between men and women and when they were speaking to other Cameroonian people versus Americans was amazing. Moreover he Nigerian accent was distinctly different--and as a non African person I love that the narration honored all of this. This was so beautiful. I'm grateful to have heard it and believe it enriched my life and showed me another aspect of this American dream and life.

It was absolutely brilliant. LOVED it. Definitely a new favorite--I hated for it to end. The only thing more elegant than Noah's witty storytelling is hearing his personal narration in his own voice. Those accents! In a word: sublime. Learned so much, man. And felt like an old friend was sharing it all. I'm certain I'll listen to it again before the summer ends. Give it a listen--even if you don't like audiobooks. You'll be in for a treat and an enhanced cultural competency.
