I have been reading Lynley books for years. They are among my favorite. This latest installment does not disappoint, with Lynley and Havers back together again as a team, like they should be.

I have long been disappointed by the narration of the audiobooks, especially those done by Davina Porter. A series whose main protagonist is a man, and one whose voice (or Voice) is often mentioned, should have a male narrator, and one capable of carrying off Authoritative Aristocratic Brit. Simon Vance was made to be the voice of Thomas Lynley, and he does it to perfection.

I have read this book and loved it. I like listening to audiobooks of books I've read, so I was looking forward to this. I wish I'd listened to a sample before buying, because the narrator is AWFUL!
She reads every line like it's a question, with the tone going up at the end. It's unbearable. Really weird and artificial. It basically sounds like the recorded voice that makes announcements on the Tube in London, only for an entire book. I made it 20 minutes in, but I give up.
It's too bad, because it's a wonderful series!

What did you love best about A Suitable Vengeance?

It's an excellent, complex story that highlights the history of Elizabeth George's characters, while also containing a murder mystery of its own.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

It's not precisely an "edge of your seat" kind of mystery. It develops slowly, with in-depth explorations of characterizations.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Davina Porter?

Simon Vance if a man. Jennifer Ikeda if a woman. Or someone, anyone, who can manage to portray a warm male voice.

Thomas Lynley is, surprise surprise, the central character of the Lynley Mysteries. I love the books, but I find it difficult to listen to the audio books narrated by Porter, because she gets Lynley completely wrong. She makes him sound like an uptight irritating prig with no gentleness or compassion, when it is precisely these characteristics (gentleness and compassion) that are central to his character in the books. He is one of my favorite characters in literature, but Porter makes him sound downright unlikeable.
