Best Series in the Plus Catalog
Revisado: 09-06-24
This book developed Charles’ character as well as Harlan’s. Great cowboy series. I hope to find more in the Plus Catalog in the future like this.

Character development

The flawed but fascinating way characters were presented. Doig is a treasure who we can appreciate in written or audio forms.

Historia
A young Swedish immigrant finds himself penniless and alone in California. The boy travels East in search of his brother, moving on foot against the great current of emigrants pushing West. Driven back again and again, he meets naturalists, criminals, religious fanatics, swindlers, Indians, and lawmen, and his exploits turn him into a legend. Diaz defies the conventions of historical fiction and genre, offering a probing look at the stereotypes that populate our past and a portrait of radical foreignness.

Avoided the book for weeks. Finally forced myself to finish. It had moments but too few.

Every bit as good as GrayMan and Orphan X
Revisado: 03-14-23
Back in the jungle of Mexico in this story. Gail makes a return to the cast. Gilstrap doesn’t get the credit he deserves.

Captivated by the story
Revisado: 11-23-22
Extremely educational to a white person. Historical trauma starts to have meaning rather than just a buzz word when you think about 115 years of children not seeing their parents.

Historia
The number one New York Times best-selling story about American Olympic triumph in Nazi Germany, the inspiration for the PBS documentary The Boys of '36, broadcast to coincide with the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 80th anniversary of the boys' gold medal race. Out of the depths of the Depression comes an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times - the improbable, intimate account of how nine working-class boys from the American West showed the world at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant.

Courageous and historically sound
Revisado: 07-03-20
The book is interesting and the characters sound like common men who rise to the occasion. Ed Hermann reads clearly and with emotion to keep me, if not riveted, at least invested in knowing what turns the tale will take by it's end. The guess from the beginning was the Boys were successful in their quest. The story was more about the young men, the troubles America was struggling with from WWI into the Dust Bowl and Depression and the Nazis image making leading up to the Olympics of '36. Not a waste of time.

The self-assured Ifemelu departs for America, where Obinze hopes to join her, but post-9/11 America will not let him in, and he plunges into a dangerous, undocumented life in London. Fifteen years later, after so long apart and so many changes, will they find the courage to meet again, face to face?

Race through Black non American eyes
Revisado: 06-17-20
The author wove the stories of several Nigerians with insight into race in America. I listened to the book during the period of the killing of George Floyd and the resulting violence. It seemed to help me understand some of the anger and anguish in our community.
