Too focused
Revisado: 02-01-20
I was hoping for a broad overview of Scottish history. There was a lot on the Scottish Wars for Independence (William Wallace) but nothing between that time period and the Industrial Revolution. Then it went immediately to the present day.

Historia
Along with the volcanic destruction of Pompeii and the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, the Lisbon quake of 1755 is one of the most destructive natural disasters ever recorded. After being jolted by a massive quake, Lisbon was then pounded by a succession of tidal waves and finally reduced to ash by a fire that raged for five straight days.

Great book, not good reader.
Revisado: 12-12-18
The book tells a good story well. The reader’s pronunciation of Portuguese, French, and Spanish is really terrible. You don’t need to know those languages to cringe. However, the book is well worth the listen.

Historia
Them began as a book about different kinds of extremists, but after Jon had got to know some of them - Islamic fundamentalists, neo-Nazis, Ku Klux Klansmen - he found that they had one oddly similar belief: that a tiny, shadowy elite rule the world from a secret room. In Them, Jon sets out, with the help of the extremists, to locate that room. The journey is as creepy as it is comic, and along the way Jon is chased by men in dark glasses, unmasked as a Jew in the middle of a Jihad training camp, and more.

Bad reading of a good book
Revisado: 01-26-14
What made the experience of listening to Them: Adventures with Extremists the most enjoyable?
The content was good, but the reading made listening to this audiobook painful
What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?
The first hand accounts of extremists
How did the narrator detract from the book?
His accent was strange and his reading was stiff. The pronounciations were bizarre. Antisemite was pronounced Anti sea mite, which I have never heard before. When someone who the author was interviewing laughed, the author made a weird "ha ha" sound. It was like fingernails down a chalkboard. Producers should really dissuade authors from reading their own books.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
No
Any additional comments?
The content is really good, but I almost stopped listening to it.

Very Poor Reading
Revisado: 05-08-11
The book is written simply and is not bad overall. The reading, however, is horrible. While mispronunciation of Wisconsin towns can be forgiven, the reader should have at least taken the time to find out how to pronounce some of the key individuals in the book. The reading of each letter in HUAC even after it is identified as an acronym is simply ignorance of both the definition of the word "acronym" and American history. There are many other examples of a near complete lack of preparation to read the book. I've never written a review for Audible before, but I just couldn't stop myself in this case. The author and publisher should be horrified by the reading of this book.
