I only try on one of Nina’s pristine white dresses once. Just to see what it’s like. But she soon finds out...and by the time I realize my attic bedroom door only locks from the outside, it’s far too late. But I reassure myself: The Winchesters don’t know who I really am. They don’t know what I’m capable of....

Worst Armentrout Book Ever
Revisado: 12-29-24
It took me forever bc it was just so bad. Slow, shallow development, constant repetitive conversations. As someone who has been reading her books for so long I was extremely disappointed. The characters consistent decisions. Just awful

Historia
Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

A beautiful epic tale
Revisado: 12-13-24
Wow! It was such a good book, filled with culture and deep perspective from multiple characters. The narrator was very good (except his British and Scottish accents), and the interconnectedness of the complete multi-general story was just fascinating. Highly recommend. There is significant tragedy including as it relates to young ones so if you are triggered by that, may want to proceed with caution.

Maybe it was Shallow on Purpose
Revisado: 11-10-24
This is my third Amor Towles novel to listen to (Lincoln Highway and a Gentleman in Moscow previously). I enjoyed those two immensely. The narrators really brought the beautiful stories to life. The narrator for this one fell short. She didn’t sound properly reminiscent of the era or of the geography. And her intonation was just a bit monotonous for me. She wasn’t bad, just not the right narrator for this story. The story itself had a lot of characters and as we go through a fleeting year of a woman’s life, I enjoyed it but felt there was something missing, some depth of character or in at least one of her relationships that could have given more to the emotion of the book. Emotion that never quite achieved its potential. Kate’s and Eves relationship for me, was perplexing too, more from Kate’s support of when you look at her perceptions in other aspects of the story, seem oddly light/flippant/weirdly accepting.

Historia
After a startling betrayal ends with both Sera and the dangerously seductive ruler of the Shadowlands she has fallen madly in love with being held captive by the false King of the Gods, there is only one thing that can free Nyktos and prevent the forces of the Shadowlands from invading Dalos and igniting a War of Primals. Convincing Kolis won’t be easy, though–not even with a lifetime of training.

Epic Disappointment
Revisado: 12-07-23
To avoid spoilers - the narration continues to be painful especially related to male characters. The revelations or reveals were not that at all and could see a mile away. There was a lot of repetitive dialogue. The end was anti-climactic. Even the sex scenes were repetitive. As some others have said the internal dialogue was major overkill. The entire books could have happened in 120 pages and still would been just OK. There was also some major hypocrisy in this that made characters seems disjointed and the story not have the depth it needed. I was REALLY looking forward to this book and am so disappointed.

A refreshing retelling
Revisado: 09-27-23
Narrator - lovvvve. Story great - we already know it; but there was added depth, some inklings of what’s to come, etc. while I enjoyed the refresher and Cass’s perspective, I did get a little tired of him saying how unexpected Poppy was.

My favorite Easy listening tales
Revisado: 07-05-23
I enjoy listening to this series while I’m driving or doing mindless activity. They are the most captivating or suspenseful, but they are light and enjoyable for the most part. There were certain aspects of this particular story that I felt could have went a little deeper (when will get some of Mr Lacy’s backstory?!?!)

Bleh - lacking suspense & depth
Revisado: 05-24-23
There was nothing suspenseful. And aspects of the story could have been left out to give more space to create depth and interest in other areas. I kept waiting for something really exciting or for a big twist and it fell flat for me.

Too much of the same - narration was disappointing.
Revisado: 02-22-22
Without spoiling anything, it was way too reliant of formula and making this another Poppy.
I was hoping it wouldn’t be this narrator for this series too, it it was. Her male for narration is painful, and sometimes the voices she chooses for other characters seem out of place. I blame the audiobook director fr thar too.
I’m thankful for this series for the backstory and as I’m awaiting war of two queens, but it could have been way better. If my expectations had been lower then maybe I would have rated it a 4.
I listened to this with whispersync, reading 70% and listening 30%

The background music/sound is distracting
Revisado: 08-30-20
I loved the idea of this and the speaker has great experience in the subject matter but the sound/music in the background is so distracting and really *grating* to me to the point I just couldn’t listen all the way through. :-(
