Did this need to be as long as it was? No. Honestly the only fairytale reimagining I really enjoyed was the Cinderella one. If I’m honest, the David’s Dragon fairytale was the most meaningful part of this and truly beautiful, I feel this could have been a novella by itself, but still the project was fun enough.

This felt super generic and honestly kind of infuriating at times. I love a HEA, but the journey to it was just WTF. Henry is almost irredeemable and Harrison deserves way better, but honestly this book clings to tropes for dear life, but ironically is severely lacking in comedy for a romcom. There is nothing new or inspiring here but it is quick enough so idk it’s a meh for me.

This has been my favorite in the series thus far, which is saying a lot because I’ve really enjoyed the 2 before this one! I’m such a Tracy Crosswhite stan at this point and never thought I’d be so into a crime drama series before. This book really explores the disgusting ability of white privilege to sweep crime under the rug and the importance of justice for all humans as well as the mistreatment, racism, and otherwise neglect of crimes committed against indigenous peoples. There are two homicides explored in this book, one from the past and one from the present, each captivating, complex, and horrific. I loved the exploration of each, the parallels across them and the thread the connected them both. I even got emotional towards the end. This book was so moving and I’m so excited to keep listening to the audiobooks!

TL/DR Just don’t do it, pick something else.

I hate to say it but this was so lame. The stakes didn’t feel very high due to the lighthearted banter that was constant amidst a child being missing. I think one of the major flaws is that the plot is largely centered around these missing kids in this town, but the book is named for the guy trying to find them. These missing kids felt like a side story to the exploration of Wilde and his adult life after being found in the woods as a child for who knows how long. I think if you’re going to name the book what it’s named, make it actually about his time in the woods and his time after, not him searching for these kids and throwing in here and there that he has difficulty connecting and likes being in the woods.

I was entertained listening to this story for a bit but never felt truly invested in the plot or the characters. The major twist in the end, while I didn’t see it coming, just made me angrier about listening to this whole thing, and then the final twist was just like… who really cares. The characters were mostly unlikable (except Hester) and this really just felt like a machismo thing about how being outdoorsy makes this guy so super duper cool and bada*s but like… idk it was all just far fetched and not in a satisfying way. Plus this was so politically on the nose I was rolling my eyes so hard through the last hour.

The most redeeming quality of this was the narration which was great, but the story itself was not it.

This story is incredible. This is a story about enduring, but also overcoming. There are some incredible conversations that take place here and should continue long after reading. This is an inherently queer story, and Doubting Thomas honors this while also holding space for other readers to come in and enjoy. I cannot recommend this story enough, there are many conversations about pedophilia/sexual predation, addiction, racism, and displays of homophobia, but if you can deal with this it is well-worth it.
