Historia
Obituary writer Nadine Barbault doesn’t mind being called “Lady Death”. It suits the ice queen persona she’s cultivated to survive the fast-paced Toronto Herald. So when Nadine learns that famous (and reclusive) author Dot Voline has died, she doesn’t hesitate to run the obituary…only to discover that Dot is very much alive. Nadine’s screw-up has brought Wesley Chen of the rival Spear no end of joy—she’s been a thorn in his extremely ambitious side for years. But the renewed interest in Dot also surfaced chatter about a mysterious past scandal.

Fun, and intelligently romantic
Revisado: 08-23-24
Loved the writing and narration. Character development was good, and each was interesting.
Favorite part? It was romantic in a modern and adult way- without being graphic.

Preoccupied with work and her ever growing to-do list, she fails to notice her lovely husband Dan seems bereft, her son can barely meet her eye, and her daughter won’t go near her. Revisado: 03-13-24
Just get this book. It’s funny , smart, light hearted and entertaining.
A new Scalzi always gets my attention, and Wil Wheaton is a fantastic narrator.
I don’t know this lingered on my wish list for so long. I even got it on sale! It’s definitely worth a full credit though. My only criticism is that I wish it were longer because I didn’t want it to end.

But when they wake in his bed the next morning, they’re convinced that in their drunken haze they witnessed a murder. Problem is, the body has vanished and no one believes them.

Fun mix of murder, mystery and romance
Revisado: 03-05-24
Really liked this story. It manages to be a bit different from other Austen-inspired works, in a good way. The author has some untapped talent, and would like to look for subsequent works . She inserts some surprisingly insightful and actually helpful internal dialogue by the main characters.
I look forward to seeing what else she comes up with.

Historia
Millions of people–looking to cheat on their partners–signed up for Ashley Madison in the early 2000s, seeking a private space to share their public desires. The promise of discretion was shattered in the summer of 2015, when anonymous hackers stole the company’s cache of user information and published it worldwide. The result? One of the most shocking data breaches of the internet age. Overnight, millions of unfaithful spouses had their real names, addresses and sexual preferences published online in a searchable database that anyone could browse.

Nothing new- except excuses. Not worth the time.
Revisado: 02-23-24
This is an unapologetic apologia for infidelity, and the accompanying behavior. It throws jn a few nuggets of reasonably neutral analysis- but only a very very few. And each of these was immediately countered by defense and justification. There is no new information here.

While their bodies are frozen, their minds, still active and awake, are uploaded into a massive quantum computer. The first group are all astronauts, about to leave Earth on a one-way interstellar colonization mission. The second group consists of convicted murderers and volunteers who elect to serve their sentences in a virtual-reality prison.

Predictable, big names all gave meh performances- sometimes free is still too much
Revisado: 11-07-23
I am surprised this recording got the big names it did. This story was instantly predictable, and poorly written. It took what are some currently popular themes and story lines from other much more talented authors. A high school student could have written better. It wasn’t immediately disastrous- but don’t let the first chapter fool you- the initial promise is a mirage. The only “twists” in this story are the ones you see clearly coming.
I listened to the whole thing, mostly because I was doing a project all day and didn’t have the chance to look for another listen. The other reason I kept listening was a conscious attempt to see if I could enjoy (and sometimes find!!) the story around the social agenda writ large.
Politically I’m a middle of the road kinda girl- but this was soooo cringe. The only people this story didn’t take pot shots at were religious luddites who ironically will never hear it.
Even the trans character, clearly written in as window dressing, got exactly zero character development - except that they were trans, Every aspect of this story was written as a social ideological checklist .
I didn’t just regret wasting my time on this, I regret I used brain power to process it at all.
I gave this an extra star only because there was some *very* basic research into *some* of the underlying science, and the performances weren’t actually abrasive. Don’t take that as a recommendation- find something better.

They connect to Outland - an alternate Earth with identical geology, but where humans never evolved. I don’t understand the negative reviews! Seriously. Sure it’s not quite as good as the Bob books. It’s a little “fluffier” maybe? But the humor is still true DET style.
Come on- DET and Ray Porter?? You can’t go wrong.
I put this on my wish list a while ago, but never bought it because of some of the negative reviews. Finally used this month’s credit on it and I’m so very glad I did.

I listen to most of the free shorter selections as I do chores and errands, and this worked well as a background diversion.
The critical reviews aren’t exactly *wrong*- but I can’t help wondering what they went in expecting.
