probably better to read with your eyes than ears
Revisado: 04-01-25
the primary narrator fully ruined this book. she had no volume control and went from inaudible to overly loud with no consistency. she also read so slowly, I had it up to 1.6x speed to make her sound closer to normal talking pace, which made everyone else sound insanely fast.

Historia
It’s a beautiful day in Newport, Rhode Island, when Phoebe Stone arrives at the grand Cornwall Inn wearing a green dress and gold heels, not a bag in sight, alone. She's immediately mistaken by everyone in the lobby for one of the wedding people, but she’s actually the only guest at the Cornwall who isn’t here for the big event. Phoebe is here because she’s dreamed of coming for years—she hoped to shuck oysters and take sunset sails with her husband, only now she’s here without him, at rock bottom, and determined to have one last decadent splurge on herself.

I'm not sure why everyone is losing their minds over this decidedly average book. It's like a cringey 90s romcom without the com and a note of 2024 with a suicidal character. Moderately interesting, but nothing to write home about. the narrator put an odd emphasis on her Ps and Ks to the point of distraction, but overall, her performance was good.

Historia
For Iris, each visit to her mother in St Mabon’s Cove, Cornwall has been the same—a serene escape from the city. But today, as she breaths in the salt air on the doorstep of her beloved childhood home, a heavy weight of anticipation settles over her. Iris knows she’s adopted, but any questions about where she came from have always been shut down by her parents, who can’t bear to revisit the past. Now, Iris can’t stop thinking about what she’s read on the official paperwork: BABY GIRL, FRANCE, 1939 – the year war was declared with Nazi Germany.

I was interested enough in the story to slog through the tediously detailed writing and the narrator's voice that got increasingly annoying, but had to put it at 1.6x speed so as to shorten the amount of my life that went into this.

baffling...
Revisado: 09-17-24
...how many good reviews this has. plodding and boring to start and then suddenly about halfway through all the characters are church going Scripture quoters who talk about God's glory.
I am Christian, so Christianity in books is fine, but not like this. I feel like this a typical attempt to "hook" readers in so they won't abandon ship when the proselytizing starts. super obnoxious and the story wasn't even remotely compelling anyway.
I had it at 1.7x speed just to have the resolution, but couldn't care less about any of the characters.
there's more I could say, but it's hardly worth my time.

The new novel from the bestselling author of You Had Me At Hello. Anna Alessi - history expert, possessor of a lot of hair and an occasionally filthy mouth - seeks nice man for intelligent conversation and Mills & Boon moments. Despite the oddballs that keep turning up on her dates, Anna couldn't be happier. As a 30-something with a job she loves, life has turned out better than she dared dream.

Mhairi McFarlane is one of my favorite authors and she really hit it out of the park with this one. Compelling characters and an interesting storyline. I especially like the way she addressed bullying and atonement. This is one I'll read again for sure.

All her life, Zofia has found comfort in two things during times of hardship: books and her best friend, Janina. But no one could have imagined the horrors of the Nazi occupation in Warsaw. As the bombs rain down and Hitler’s forces loot and destroy the city, Zofia finds that now books are also in need of saving. With the death count rising and persecution intensifying, Zofia jumps to action to save her friend and salvage whatever books she can from the wreckage, hiding them away, and even starting a clandestine book club.

could've been better
Revisado: 09-06-24
I loved the Last Bookshop in London but thoroughly disliked this one, which is a shame. Zofia was not a likeable character for me so right off the bat I was less interested despite being interested in the true story on which this is based. It drips with pretension and Saskia Maarleveld's performance is overdramatic, which makes it all the more unenjoyable. Martin is a good author and Maarleveld is a good narrator (most of the time), but this one really missed the mark for me.

Great!
Revisado: 09-03-24
This was super easy to follow and a vey thorough explanation of the Aeneid, which was helpful for someone who doesn't absorb ancient literature particularly well. The instructor was very knowledgeable, but had a speech impediment that was a little annoying, but not so distracting as to take away from the material.

Since then Sy has practiced true immersion journalism, from New England aquarium tanks to the reefs of French Polynesia and the Gulf of Mexico, pursuing these wild, solitary shape-shifters.

... of why authors should never read their own books.
I had expected a book about octopuses, but this is all about the author. She's pretty awful at reading, her tone drips with pretension and privilege in the most obnoxious way. I managed to get through two chapters before I just couldn't even pretend to care. My brother said it's a slog to finish and therefore not worth it so I quit.

sure wish audible was better about tagging lgbt books as lgbt. I googled the author when the lgbt aspects were coming to the surface and she claims this book is decidedly not a romance, but it 100% is.
audible won't let me return it because I didn't get it with a credit. so glad to be out money for something I won't read that audible didn't properly tag.
