Historia
Elected to the papacy at the age of 76, Pope John XXIII was to have a brief but important reign. Although he had a doctorate in theology, his gifts were pastoral, reaching out to the people of the Church. Vatican II, which he convened, brought forth the idea of a church as a community, in which all God's people are a sign of redemption for the human race. Cahill, in his short biography, gives us a sense of the enduring importance of John XXIII's idea.

Enlightening Biography
Revisado: 04-09-25
This is an enlightening and critical biography of John XXIII, providing a sketch of relevant papal history, a fetching portrait of John, the challenges of his momentous life, and his significant mark in history. The narration was perfectly suited. I wouldn't have minded if there was more about service in France as the papal nuncio after WWII, but there was enough to be intriguing.

Historia
Biographer and historian Stephen B. Oates tells the story of the coming of the American Civil War through the voices and perspectives of 13 principal players in the drama, from Thomas Jefferson and Henry Clay in the Missouri crisis of 1820 down to Stephen A. Douglas, Jefferson Davis, and Abraham Lincoln in the final crisis of 1861. This innovative approach shows the crucial role that perception of events played in the sectional hostilities that pushed the United States irreversibly toward a national calamity.

Exciting experiment
Revisado: 03-21-24
in writing in first person voices, a selection of the some more well know pre-civil war historic figures the narrative portrays engagingly the conflicting concerns, aspirations, feelings and points of view characterizing the divisions between north and south, anti & pro slavery, of this time. This experiment in voices succeeded for me. The reviews that I have read thus far for "The Approaching Fury" have been glowing, I cannot but agree. This would make a great book for all kinds of interested students. The readers were convincing and varied, making listening to this book enthralling. Must say that this experiment in history presentation was exciting, and I feel fortunate to have experienced it.

Historia
Stefan Zweig's memoir, The World of Yesterday, recalls the golden age of prewar Europe - its seeming permanence, its promise and its devastating fall with the onset of two world wars. Zweig's passionate, evocative prose paints a stunning portrait of an era that danced brilliantly on the brink of extinction. It is an unusually humane account of Europe from the closing years of the 19th century through to World War II, seen through the eyes of one of the most famous writers of his era.

Brilliant reading of an outstanding memoir
Revisado: 03-15-24
I read World of Yesterday and recalled it as a revealing portrait of a literary man’s world. What stood out is the difficulty, isolation and surprises involved in going against the raging stream, by opposing war. Opposition despite its intoxicating lure, the persuasive propaganda that depicts its logic as unassailable, and portrays the enemy as pure evil.

Learned much about how open minded explorations toward Israel/Palestinian understanding relations was thwarted by Jewish community leaders who believed they were doing their bit by limiting discourse. It is a chapter that remains open.

Historia
Taking listeners from Thucydides to the origin of the French Revolution to the Civil War and beyond, James M. Banner, Jr., explores what historians do and why they do it. Banner shows why historical knowledge is unlikely ever to be unchanging, why history as a branch of knowledge is always a search for meaning and a constant source of argument, and why history is so essential to individuals' awareness of their location in the world and to every group and nation's sense of identity and destiny.

Historia
On the early morning of March 16, 1968, American soldiers from three platoons of Charlie Company entered a group of hamlets located in the Son Tinh district of South Vietnam, located near the Demilitarized Zone and known as "Pinkville" because of the high level of Vietcong infiltration. The soldiers, many still teenagers who had been in the country for three months, were on a "search and destroy" mission. Three hours after the GIs entered the hamlets, more than 500 unarmed villagers lay dead, killed in cold blood.

The meaning of My Lai
Revisado: 02-03-24
The meaning of the the massacre, coverup, exposure and trials after My Lai is a history as important as that of the Holocaust, and perhaps much more relevant to those who want to understand how barbarous cruelty and murder can be perpetrated by those who deceive themselves into believing they are serving their nation and virtue.

Historia
First published in 1968, Weimar Culture is one of the masterworks of Peter Gay's distinguished career. A study of German culture between the two wars, the book brilliantly traces the rise of the artistic, literary, and musical culture that bloomed ever so briefly in the 1920s amid the chaos of Germany's tenuous post-World War I democracy, and crashed violently in the wake of Hitler's rise to power.

Weimar culture was shone
Revisado: 01-29-24
I read Weimar culture many years ago. I did not realize how much I missed. This book is rich in insights about a culturally fertile period that emerged after the war and was killed by the depression, unemployment, and other circumstances that were not inevitable. Deservedly a classic.

Historia
In this taut inquiry, Posner digs deep into the radical history of the religious right to reveal how issues of race and xenophobia have always been at the movement’s core, and how religion often cloaked anxieties about perceived threats to a white, Christian America. Fueled by an antidemocratic impulse, and united by this narrative of reverse victimization, the religious right and the alt-right support a common agenda.

Eye opening. Did not realize the genealogy of many of the positions the evangelical right promotes neither roots in racism nor by what logic support for Trump is so foundational. This book makes it too light. The history of the connections between the proto fascist movements of Eastern Europe and evangelicals was also an unexpected part of this story.
