Historia
The stables stood since Elizabethan times on the grounds of Castle Whitstable in Kent. There was a time when the trumpets of war sounded the stables’ grooms fitted the castle mounts for battle. That was before the Great War, and before machine guns, mustard gas, and aeroplanes. It was a glorious time, at least in the myths woven to disguise the blood and screams of men and horses dying in battle.

I was so looking forward to the book, but I am deeply disappointed. The pronunciation of words like quay (key) and the silly accents turn it into a comedy. I put this down to the shoddy production. The person who let this get published should be fired!

Great story, problematic reading
Revisado: 05-10-20
The most annoying thing about this book is the bad pronunciation. The book is littered with them, which a good producer should have picked up. It certainly spoiled my enjoyment.

February 1942: The Struma, a broken-down steamer, explodes and sinks in the Black Sea, drowning 768 Rumanian Jews fleeing the Nazis and heading for Palestine, and safety. June 1944: 31 SAS soldiers are captured behind enemy lines and are forced to dig their own graves before being shot and buried in a forest in the heart of France. Seventy years later: A young woman is attacked in the grounds of Edinburgh Zoo - the attacker seeking the document that might link these two wartime events.

My only criticism is the use of an American voice as narrator. A good voice, but not Yorkshire like the main character.

Letters discovered in a tin box hidden in the foundation of a small cottage in Normandy reveal a terrible secret, a desperate whisper between the lines. Antoine's world was collapsing. His beautiful Marianne, his precious daughter Ariéle, missing. The lives of hundreds - perhaps thousands - of allied soldiers preparing to storm Juno Beach on D-Day literally are in his hands.

This is a five star book, marred only by the mispronoucing of words like quay, and various place names. Better production would have eliminated these simple errors. Notwithstanding, this is a great read, and highly recommended.

This really is an appalling book, and my advice is to stay away from it. The reader is awful, with terrible pronunciation. The production is bad too, as there are at least two stumbles and re-reads which have NOT been edited from the piece.

I was blown over by the quality of the writing, and the delivery by Michael Page. This is a quirky thriller read in a personal way that draws the listener into the story from beginning to end.

Where does An Empty Death rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This is my first Laura Wilson novel, and it won't be my last. She writes a good gripping tale, which kept me listening. Sean Barrett's narration is superb. He really brings the book and the characters to life. If only all audio books were this good to listen to.

Great idea badly executed
Revisado: 03-24-13
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
The story idea is great, but the writing is appalling. It really feels as if the book was never through the hands of an editor. The writer has little style, and after a time the story telling becomes mundane. The reader does his best to bring it alive, but frankly there are better books out there, and i feel that this was a waste of my time and money.
