Poignant

One of the best books I’ve listened to in the past couple of years. I grew to love the main character, Hubert, an old man with a huge heart. I cried over his losses and struggles - they felt very real to me. The performance was spot on - truly fabulous.

Horrible narration
Revisado: 05-10-22
The dialog is stilted, made even worse by the several narrators - none of them seem to know where to place emphasis or how to read in a natural cadence. Don’t know if the story eventually gets good, had to abandon after about an hour.

Light romance well performed

Love Amy McFadden - she makes any story better. The romance itself was cotton candy for the brain - fluffy and without much substance but very sweet.

Moderately good story, sub-par narration

Narrator was stiff, frequently emphasized the wrong word in sentences, and should learn how to pronounce the word “enveloped” (en-vel’-oped not en’-ve-loped).

Historia
Despite constant efforts to declutter your home, do papers still accumulate like snowdrifts and clothes pile up like a tangled mess of noodles?Japanese cleaning consultant Marie Kondo takes tidying to a whole new level, promising that if you properly simplify and organize your home once, you'll never have to do it again. Most methods advocate a room-by-room or little-by-little approach, which doom you to pick away at your piles of stuff forever.

Very repetitive
Revisado: 01-07-20
Honestly I don’t understand the hype around this book. The process of determining whether each object/item in your home sparks joy as the test for whether or not to keep it is, admittedly, an interesting and probably a novel approach to de-cluttering, but everything of substance in this book could have been conveyed in about 10 pages. It was tedious to hear repeatedly how this author spent her whole childhood organizing and tidying.

Excellent narration. Fun and witty dialog and thoughts. Some of Amy’s agonizing wasn’t really believable, but overall I enjoyed the story and writing style.

Fun little adventure
Revisado: 02-27-19
There was quite a lot about this story that wasn’t in the slightest bit believable, but I didn’t mind setting aside my scrutiny and just enjoying a fun little adventure. The author read the story perfectly, which contributed significantly to my enjoyment of it.

Historia
Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon - the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him "the bitter neighbor from hell". But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness.

The Imagery!
Revisado: 02-16-19
This book is so full of vivid, clever, and often funny imagery. One of my favorites: “Ove stands there with his hands in his pockets. The cat beside him looks as if it would do the same, if it had pockets. Or hands.” This writer has an insightful way of looking at ordinary circumstances or behaviors and comparing them to something completely different and maybe bizarre, thereby instantly creating a perfect image of the person’s (or cat’s) expression or action or thought.

Excellent narration, gripping story
Revisado: 10-23-18
Any mother, or anyone who has struggled to become a mother, will be drawn into this story. It’s not a “who-done-it” but rather more of a “why-done-it” thriller. The characters and events mostly seem plausible; no single character is unblemished. I listened with fascination, wondering how it would all unfold - very entertaining. I would have given five stars for the story but the ending was a little too neat, and part of it was not quite believable. Nonetheless, I highly recommend this book.

In The Signature of All Things, Elizabeth Gilbert returns to fiction, inserting her inimitable voice into an enthralling story of love, adventure and discovery. Spanning much of the 18th and 19th centuries, the novel follows the fortunes of the extraordinary Whittaker family as led by the enterprising Henry Whittaker - a poor-born Englishman who makes a great fortune in the South American quinine trade, eventually becoming the richest man in Philadelphia.

Lyrical prose
Revisado: 09-14-18
If you need an action-packed storyline, this is not the book for you. But if you find joy in the poetic assembly and choice of words to convey a poignant life story, you will not be disappointed. I frequently smiled with genuine pleasure derived from lovely phrases, delightful vocabulary, and creative descriptions. And the narrator was always perfectly spot on with her tone, emphasis, and pacing. Truly an enjoyable experience from start to finish.
