Historia
Laura Jane Grace doesn’t defy rock ‘n’ roll. She defines it. In an inspiring examination of identity and creativity, the founder and frontwoman of notorious punk band Against Me! recounts the story of her extraordinary life, her rise to fame, and the painful but powerful moments that have led her to where she is now. Black Me Out invites listeners to not only hear Grace’s complicated journey through gender dysphoria, addiction, mental health, and artistic integrity, but recognize the universal pursuit of our authentic selves. Track the common journey with a modern icon.

Candid and emotion-filled: loved it!
Revisado: 05-07-25
I truly enjoyed the author’s narration and how impassioned she is when sharing her story. It is the most genuine, authentic and sincere narration. Interspersing her songs throughout the book gave the story and the lyrics added meaning and significance. This should be required reading/listening for those who are transphobic.

Historia
When the United States entered World War II, it had to face its own contradictions at home. Opportunities opened up for Black people and women in support of the war effort. But ideas about race and gender didn't change as swiftly. Listen to the story of the first all-Black battalion in the Women's Army Corps—the Six Triple Eight—and its leader, Major Charity Adams. These women bravely confronted the racism and sexism they experienced. And they did it while creating a system to make sure millions of letters and packages got to soldiers fighting in Europe.

Good for a brief recap
Revisado: 01-22-25
Wish there was something more substantial to recount the bravery of the 6888 and its fearless leader, Lt. Col, Charity Adams, but this does a good introductory job.

Historia
When the enslaved Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he decides to hide on nearby Jackson Island until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck Finn has faked his own death to escape his violent father, recently returned to town. As all readers of American literature know, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and too-often-unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond.

The “OTHER” side of the coin
Revisado: 01-04-25
The voice of the “other,” loudly proclaiming its equal right to narrate its story, beautifully and engagingly narrated! One of the few that I will have to listen to again soon.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

BEST audiobook ever!
Revisado: 08-13-24
If this novel is brought to the big screen, it will take a lot of skill to top the quality of this audio version. The narrator is simply magnificent, but the timely, unobtrusive sound effects contributed immensely to transport you light years away. This deserves more than 5 stars; I give it a rating of several galaxies!

One is living hand to mouth, suffering at the hands of a violent partner who would rather see her dead than leave him. You may think you know these women already and how their lives will unfold. Beth will live happily ever after with her little girl and her soulmate. Cath will go back to her abusive husband. And these two women will never cross paths. But you will be wrong.

After listening to four of Lailey’s narrations, I have concluded that it is his engaging and vivid style more than Weatherly’s writing what makes the Dan Riley novels “page turners.” Looking forward to the next book in this series.

Timely (Memorial Day) Tribute to THE WOMEN who Served in Viet Nam
Revisado: 05-28-24
I couldn’t have chosen a better book to listen to on Memorial Day weekend. I was in elementary and middle school during the war but already recognized the unfairness of a war that was endured by mostly middle-class and poor young men… and WOMEN! This book has taught me so much! It is also an amazingly engaging story that is beautifully narrated from start to finish. It should be required reading in our schools—and among our elected officials, especially those who’ve never served our nation yet have in their hands control over decision-making that endangers the lives of young patriots, both during active service and for the rest of their battle-scarred lives.

Putin’s and Russia’s supporters should be required to read this!
Revisado: 10-11-23
After listening to everything Browder has endured and the inhumane atrocities committed against Sergei Magnitski at the hands of Putin and his cronies, it’s hard to understand how anyone can consider withdrawing support for Ukraine. This book also makes one wonder how far into our own politics Putin’s tentacles have penetrated.

Historia
Senator Frank Church of Idaho was an unlikely hero. He led congressional opposition to the Vietnam War and had become a scathing, radical critic of what he saw as American imperialism around the world. But he was still politically ambitious, privately yearning for acceptance from the foreign policy establishment that he hated and eager to run for president. Despite his flaws, Church would show historic strength in his greatest moment, when in the wake of Watergate he was suddenly tasked with investigating abuses of power in the intelligence community.

Fascinatingly relevant to current US history!
Revisado: 05-26-23
I was drawn to this book by an engaging TV interview of its author. What a fascinating plot of intrigue, political backstabbing (figuratively AND literally) misinformation and corruption—so reminiscent of today’s political affairs in the U.S. (in fact, events here recounted clearly set precedent for current Republican Party extremism). Can’t wait to READ the book. Unfortunately, this is because the narrator’s reading, paused at inappropriate moments, led to the misinterpretation of passages and the need to replay various segments. Otherwise, I enthusiastically recommend this audiobook!

Historia
Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is 12, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

Magical plot, monotonous narration
Revisado: 08-21-22
I loved this story, its plot and especially its strong and well-developed and complex characters. The narrator’s monotone put me to sleep just about every time I listened to this audio book. Would nevertheless recommend, along with a few cups of strong coffee.
