Historia
Inspired by her research for the hit podcast Ultra, Rachel Maddow charts the rise of a wild American strain of authoritarianism that has been alive on the far-right edge of our politics for the better part of a century. Before and even after our troops had begun fighting abroad in World War II, a clandestine network flooded the country with disinformation aimed at sapping the strength of the U.S. war effort and persuading Americans that our natural alliance was with the Axis, not against it.

Frightening in it's foreshadowing of what's happening today
Revisado: 06-06-24
Rachel Maddow is unparalleled in her ability to connect the dots. I came away from this book with a profound sense of frustration and anger. America had been infiltrated by Nazis and Americans in high places were supporting them. The few people who were trying to fight this were stopped at every juncture by questionable people, including the president of the United States. I feel some fear, but I also feel some passion for vigilance and corrections. The far right is incredibly powerful today and, like so many Americans, I shake my head, trying to understand how these people can be so duped. And then I read this book and know exactly how that can happen. Thank you, Rachel, for opening my eyes and straightening my spine for the work we have ahead.

In The Insect Crisis, Oliver Milman dives into the torrent of recent evidence that suggests this kaleidoscopic group of creatures is suffering the greatest existential crisis in its remarkable 400-million-year history.

Boring, when it could have been exhilarating!
Revisado: 01-13-24
There were enormously long description of fields and towns and buildings, and things that have nothing to do with insects. It seemed that this person liked very much to hear or read, or write their own voice. Yes, there is a crisis and yes, we need to address it but by the time you get through 10 hours and nine chapters, you don't really care any longer. I've seldom read anything that caused me to care less about something than I did when I begin. And this could have been very exhilarating, very interesting, and very necessary by combining all these nine chapters into one or two chapters.

In the spring of 2020, Lara’s three daughters return to the family's orchard in Northern Michigan. While picking cherries, they beg their mother to tell them the story of Peter Duke, a famous actor with whom she shared both a stage and a romance years before at a theater company called Tom Lake. As Lara recalls the past, her daughters examine their own lives and relationship with their mother, and are forced to reconsider the world and everything they thought they knew.

Beautifully written and narrated
Revisado: 10-01-23
Ann Patchett has gifted us with a beautifully written book about a mothers memories of youth shared with her three grown daughters and her husband while they all huddled down on their family farm during Covid. Her story was timeless, as we all have experienced parts of the feeling she had and I could imagine Ann completely immersed, in the story and each of the characters.. Meryl Streep brought this to life in a way that I'm not sure anyone else could've done! She acted this with her voice in an incredible way! I was there at that summer stock play of Our Town, living the ecstasy and the agony all the way to the beautiful timelessness of the cherry farm.

Spellbinding and deeply personal
Revisado: 02-06-23
The story goes between 100 years of our history but it is relatable and deeply felt today. This is the telling of courage, strength, focus, and belief of a slave who is entrusted with her masters adult daughters and the hope, belief, and passion behind a school teacher 100 years later in pursuing history and truth through her students and her life. This was one book I could not put down and I’m grateful for the writing and for the multiple voices playing the parts in this book that brought it to life so well!

Historia
It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

Heartfelt, honest, thoughtful portrayel
Revisado: 01-24-23
This is an excellent book, well written, well read, and very insightful. It gave me the opportunity to see the true inner workings of a monarchy, including dysfunction, but also including the enormous expectation that is put on all of them from birth. My anger arose constantly with the press and with those in the monarchy’s inner circle that were feeding things to the press. Talk about having to constantly watch your back and even then, never being sure who’s going to stab you next. I have a hard time understanding how they can have respect for one another or love for one another when they know what this other person has done to them. I’ve always loved your Mum and liked what I’ve known about both of you. I watched Harry, from the press, as he’s grown up. Both you and your Mum had always been the ones that were interesting, exciting, pushing the boundaries, passionate, extremely caring and very relatable. This book certainly cemented all of those feelings. I do hope Harry and Meghan begin to feel the huge respect many, many Americans have for them. Most importantly, please find peace and freedom and enjoy your special children. I promise to never read anything about you again. Excellent work!

Historia
Sixteen-year-old Frankie Budge—aspiring writer, indifferent student, offbeat loner—is determined to make it through yet another summer in Coalfield, Tennessee, when she meets Zeke, a talented artist who has just moved into his grandmother’s house and who is as awkward as Frankie is. Romantic and creative sparks begin to fly, and when the two jointly make an unsigned poster, shot through with an enigmatic phrase, it becomes unforgettable to anyone who sees it. The edge is a shantytown filled with gold seekers. We are fugitives, and the law is skinny with hunger for us.

Interesting premise
Revisado: 01-20-23
This is an interesting story of two “misfits” who designed a poster that became much more personally and worldwide. This certainly kept my interest and the performance was excellent. There were times that I felt I could really identify with one or both of them but I definitely felt the people around them were not flushed out characters without depth or interest. I could understand a 14 year old mind, for sure, through this narrative. When I listened at the end to the authors description of how he came upon the phrase on the poster and how he’s used it since, the concept that I had of this book changed and where I thought I connected, I really didn’t. So I would’ve given it a four but I just felt the story I read and the premise of the story were much different.

Historia
Four years before Nina Totenberg was hired at NPR, where she cemented her legacy as a prizewinning reporter, and nearly twenty-two years before Ruth Bader Ginsburg was appointed to the Supreme Court, Nina called Ruth. A reporter for The National Observer, Nina was curious about Ruth’s legal brief, asking the Supreme Court to do something revolutionary: declare a law that discriminated “on the basis of sex” to be unconstitutional. That call launched a remarkable, nearly fifty-year friendship.

Shame on you, Ruth Ginsberg!
Revisado: 10-08-22
I know I speak for many women my age who only see Ginsberg’s legacy as her petty ego and arrogance as she “rolled the dice” rather than cement a liberal justice when Obama asked her.Instead she unleashed Amy Coney Barrett on us and our children’s children! She certainly did not care about the future of women as much as she cared about her status. Shame on you Ruth Ginsberg!

What a journey!
Revisado: 04-17-22
Hope, love, sadness, agony and support from humans, dogs and cities! I rode this journey with her, as if we were best friends. She writes so vulnerably and Confluence becomes a central theme with two uniquely shaped people interlocking perfectly. I watched all my roadblocks to a relationship at 74 disappear and now believe in happenstance is all its forms. This made my day….yes I listened to it all in one day and now I am reading Delia’s other books! I do thank Nora Ephron who led me to deep places of feeling in past years and opened me to her magical sister and to sensitive positive Peter. You all are my muses.

Not a well-defined plot
Revisado: 10-18-21
I was disappointed in this book. I’m a huge fan but I felt the writing was scattered and a bit rushed. I knew the ending from close to the beginning of the book. The characters we’re not well developed. The children were scattered and a bit incoherent at times. I never understood why her husband felt the way he did because he was very uncommunicative. The performance was excellent and she really set the stage for each one of the chapters. It was really the writing that didn’t stand up to the typical plots by Ms Moriarty. Disappointed and will look for the next one.

Excellent and Intimate Portrait
Revisado: 09-23-21
This was extremely well written to the point where I could feel the wind wrestling curtains and hems of skirts. The life at that time was full of labels and castes and the perfume of the day.
I found it so interesting that Shakespeare’s name was never mentioned in this book and O’Farrell indicated that she intentionally did this to focus on Hamnet. After reading some additional resources about this book, I was even more impressed at how carefully and delicately the story was handled. Definitely one of the best I’ve read in several years!
