Historia
Thought of as the seat of our soul, then as a mysteriously animated object, the heart is still more a mystery than it is understood. Why do most animals only get one billion beats? (And how did modern humans get to over two billion - effectively letting us live out two lives?) Why are sufferers of gingivitis more likely to have heart attacks? And what does it really feel like to touch your own heart, or to have someone else's beating inside your chest?

Some parts were a bit too technical. But the other parts (where I had previous knowledge about how the heart) was really interesting. The history of how modern procedures came to be was interesting as well. Overall I enjoyed it. :)

Historia
Maude Julien's parents were fanatics who believed it was their sacred duty to turn her into the ultimate survivor - raising her in isolation and subjecting her to endless drills designed to "eliminate weakness." She endured a life without heat, hot water, adequate food, friendship, or any kind of affectionate treatment. But Maude's parents could not rule her inner life. Befriending the animals on the lonely estate as well as the characters in the novels she read in secret, young Maude nurtured in herself the compassion and love that her parents forbid as weak.

How She Survived? I'm not sure
Revisado: 11-05-18
Heard about this book through NPR. I thought I'd give it a listen and I'm glad I did. All if not most everything Maude endured made me queasy to think that this was her childhood. Her memoir is extremely sad and frustrating. I pray that she knows she's loved. Thank you for sharing your story, Maude.

Historia
Oliver Sacks' The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat tells the stories of individuals afflicted with fantastic perceptual and intellectual aberrations: patients who have lost their memories and with them the greater part of their pasts; who are no longer able to recognize people and common objects; who are stricken with violent tics and grimaces or who shout involuntary obscenities; whose limbs have become alien; who have been dismissed as retarded yet are gifted with uncanny artistic or mathematical talents.

Great!
Revisado: 10-05-17
I'm glad I finally got to read/listen to this book. It was recommended by a professor I had at CSU San Marcos in one of my Communicative Science Disorders class. I'll probably end up buying a physical copy of the book as well. Oliver Sacks' writing is eloquent, engaging, and interesting. There are a couple lulls but I think it's because I was working and listening at the same time. Good book, good performance, and a must read.

Historia
She used to work for the US government, but very few people ever knew that. An expert in her field, she was one of the darkest secrets of an agency so clandestine it doesn't even have a name. And when they decided she was a liability, they came for her without warning. Now she rarely stays in the same place or uses the same name for long. They've killed the only other person she trusted, but something she knows still poses a threat. They want her dead, and soon.

Painful to listen to. Don't bother if you're looking for something with substance. Because I this doesn't have it. If you've heard of the Twilight series, it's pretty much the same as the movies; terrible writing and mediocre love affair.
I didn't know this was the author of, Twilight. Before I knew it, it was too late. I ended up finishing the book just to finish it.

In the depths of the Great Recession, a cancer nurse, a car dealership worker, and an insurance fraud specialist helped uncover the largest consumer crime in American history - a scandal that implicated dozens of major executives on Wall Street. They called it foreclosure fraud: Millions of families were kicked out of their homes based on false evidence by mortgage companies that had no legal right to foreclose.

Great Book About Fraudulent Documents w/ Banks
Revisado: 07-18-17
This was a great book about how big banks are against working Americans. I don't think in my lifetime I'll ever want to own a home due to the fact that home ownership of a foreclosed property could lead to a foreclosure on my ownership and plunge me into debt and bankruptcy. No thank you.
I live in Hawaii and foreign investors are buying newly built Honolulu $1M-$3M condos. Median home prices alone are $500K-$800K. And that's for a shit house with 3BRM, 1BTH, no yard. There will be no middle class left, only the working poor

Historia
Al Franken, Giant of the Senate is a book about an unlikely campaign that had an even more improbable ending: the closest outcome in history and an unprecedented eight-month recount saga, which is pretty funny in retrospect. It's a book about what happens when the nation's foremost progressive satirist gets a chance to serve in the United States Senate and, defying the low expectations of the pundit class, actually turns out to be good at it.

Senator Al Franken Is The Best
Revisado: 06-07-17
I'm so happy the Senator read his autobiography. The intonation of his narration really engaged the core of who he is and how he wants to represent his state. He's a very honorable and gracious man. And I'm proud that he represents his state to the best of his ability. Bravo! P.S. He's so damn funny. I was laughing through the whole book.

Historia
Most of us know what it's like to wait for God to change our circumstances. But whether we're waiting for physical healing, an emotional breakthrough, or better relationships, waiting is something we usually try to avoid. Why? Because waiting is painful and hard. The truth is it's also inevitable. In Still Waiting, Ann Swindell explores the depths of why God wants us to wait by chronicling her own compelling story of waiting for healing from an incurable condition.

Holy crap! Save your credit and money.
Revisado: 06-01-17
Rarely do I come across a book that I didn't like. And this is one of them. I'm hopeful the book can benefit someone else who suffers from a debilitating syndrome, whatever the degree. But every other word is me, mine, my, and I. In her first voice.
I know she's talking about her experiences with trichotillomania and the fear of being judged but it kind of gets overwhelming. Not in a self depreciating mode, because she boasts enough about her good Christian background and more than excellent confidence. It gets to be overwhelming because it's not engaging.
Ugh, and she keeps writing about how the woman who bled for 12 years like she was living modern day. As if she had health care, saw doctors, and then paid with it from her dowry? Using a parable from the Bible can't parallel modern day medical advances. Poorly written. And performance is okay?

In You'll Grow Out of It, Jessi Klein offers - through an incisive collection of real-life stories - a relentlessly funny yet poignant take on a variety of topics she has experienced along her strange journey to womanhood and beyond. These include her "transformation from Pippi Longstocking-esque tomboy to are-you-a-lesbian-or-what tom man", attempting to find watchable porn, and identifying the difference between being called "ma'am" and "miss" (" miss sounds like you weigh 99 pounds").

There were so many points in the book where Jessi Klein and I shared the same values, questions, and embarrassing life moments. I appreciate the realness of her ability to call out bullshit she encountered throughout her life. Her writing and performance was great. I laughed and cried with her.
