Brilliant!
Revisado: 01-08-25
The tone, colour and shape of a full life told over three books with perfect balances of detail and wit. And never too much.
A voice performance which seems to capture Winslow’s intentions.

Complete engagement
Revisado: 11-11-24
The reader gets the small subtleties of the language spot on and brings one right into the story.
O’Brian’s mastery of the age of sail seems complete. And only ‘seems’, because I cannot tell if he has it right or wrong! But be that as it may, it is convincing.
The relationships between men and women, between money, rank, ability and science, to name a few, are as strained and strange as in an Austen, Dickens or Melville novel. Which again ‘seem’ to make it accurate and maybe tragic.

What you’re expecting …
Revisado: 10-26-24
What you’re expecting if you’ve been searching for something to read in this genre. And it should satisfy.
Solid story telling and character development, especially of the main character.
Once again strong voice performance.
It’s worth starting with the first novel in the series.

Again, Ed Harris is brilliant, as he has been with every one of these stories.
Even though you don’t know where the story is going, when it arrives at its destination you can see it’s been heading there all along.
Beautiful.

Obviously, the writing is brilliant, especially when it comes nautical descriptions and terms. (The history seems accurate, he certainly draws on historical characters and incidents.)

Revisado: 09-27-24
Ed Harris has it. Perfect reading and delivery.
Winslow produces that perfect amalgamation of humor, suspense and detail to hold one’s attention, emotion and hope right to the end. Perfect and Harris’s matches it, maybe even lifts it, if it needs that.

Historia
It was 1970 in a defeated Rhode Island fishing town. Vietnam and Nixon dominated the national news. Both the near and distant future looked bleak. But they were five inseparable high school friends with something incredible in common: an unwavering resolve to look after each other no matter what hell life threw at them. And they were on a mission. The plan was simple: Go off the grid before they turned 18 to avoid the draft. They’d sell some grass, stack some cash, then head west and start a commune. What could possibly go wrong?

The description, sentiment, simplicity. It’s sad inevitableness.
Revisado: 09-27-24
Ed Harris’s voice is perfect in every respect.
The story’s highlights, its beauty, its inevitable journey, are set against the distant Vietnam War, collapsing industries and small town shivers and shakes. It leaves you awash with emotion. Really good writing.
It reminds me of Steinbeck’s The Pearl.
I’d recommend you listen to it in one ‘sitting’ if you can.
