Historia
In 1959, America’s great indigenous art form, jazz, reached the height of its power and popularity. James Kaplan’s magnificent 3 Shades of Blue captures how that golden era came to be, and its pinnacle with the recording of Kind of Blue. It’s a book about music, and business, and race, and heroin, and the cities that gave jazz its home, and the Black geniuses behind its rise. It’s an astonishing meditation on creativity and the strange environments where it can flourish most.

Terrific interesting view of important era

This compelling narrative is a treasure trove of stories and biography of artists on the move. It also illuminates the sad history of lives of great artists ruined by drug abuse.

Really tells the history and story of this great time. Narration is excellent in contrast, unfortunately, to Kahns other work Boys of Summer where narration is so overly dramatic it's unlistenable

Real American Story Drably told in parts

The book drags early on as author gets lost in weeds and doesn't give a clear feeling for the man. But stick with it it's really worth reading.

Historia
In time for the 50th anniversary of the Mets' miraculous 1969 World Series win, right fielder Ron Swoboda tells the story of that amazing season, the people he played with and against (sometimes at the same time), and what life was like as an "Every Man" ballplayer. Ron Swoboda wasn't the greatest player the Mets ever had, but he made the greatest catch in Met history, saving a game in the 1969 World Series, and his RBI clinched the final game. By Met standards that makes him legend.

Historia
In the early 1970s, the Oakland Athletics became only the second team in Major League Baseball history to win three consecutive World Series championships. But as the decade came to a close, the A's were in free fall, having lost 108 games in 1979 while drawing just 307,000 fans. Free agency had decimated the A's, and the team's owner, Charlie Finley, was looking for a buyer. First, though, he had to bring fans back to the Oakland Coliseum. Enter Billy Martin.

Repetitive and Surprisingly Drab
Revisado: 02-07-24
Billy Martin was an exciting, brilliant, engaging and complicated character. I looked forward to this book. Unfortunately, the author seemed pressed to fill pages and rambles on repeating storyline and themes. The book is overly focused on backroom ownership politics ad nauseum and the real story is drowned out.

Martin Sheen is very good storyteller and writer and terrific narrator. His heritage, especially his father, and his journey give him alot to work with. Emilio is also good as their stories overlap and intersect but book wanes a bit as Emilio recounts Hollywoodesque choices. overall recommended.

Historia
Heather McGhee’s specialty is the American economy—and the mystery of why it so often fails the American public. From the financial crisis of 2008 to rising student debt to collapsing public infrastructure, she found a root problem: racism in our politics and policymaking. But not just in the most obvious indignities for people of color. Racism has costs for white people, too. It is the common denominator of our most vexing public problems, the core dysfunction of our democracy and constitutive of the spiritual and moral crises that grip us all.

Revisado: 10-31-21
Well researched, thorough yet accessible, McGee pulls no punches on history of systemic multi generational forces that have damaged our country especially those most vulnerable among us. Yet she points a way forward perhaps like no other book of it's kind and does so with optimism. The Sum of Us gets my highest recommendation!

Historia
The first of Plimpton's remarkable forays into participatory journalism, Out of My League chronicles with wit, charm, and grace what happens when a self-professed amateur has the chance to answer every fan's question: could he strike out a major league star? Plimpton's inspired idea - to get on the mound and pitch a few innings to the All-Stars of the American and National Leagues - begins as a fun-filled stunt and comes to a deeply hellish, nearly humiliating end.
