The Long View
Revisado: 02-03-24
This book is a masterpiece, centering around the home, one home, what we consider the American dream. The author uses that central theme of home to span hundreds of years from the first settlers of Massachusetts to our inevitable ending. The theme of home is intertwined with the drama of everyday life and death in humanity and in nature. Very beautifully written and narrated, this is a historical novel with many twists and turns.

Bill Gates explains why he cares so deeply about climate change and what makes him optimistic that the world can avoid the most dire effects of the climate crisis. An Optimist's Look at Climate Change
Revisado: 07-18-23
This book is concise, informative, and above all...optimistic. It has helped me rise above the political noise and see that there is a way forward. All we need to do is look in the right direction and make an effort. It begins with each of us!

Read all Three
Revisado: 12-13-22
This book is exactly how the author explains it in the afterword, a stone hidden in a river. It's just laying there for more people to discover and it is one of the best stories I've ever read.

Historia
In this “vital, necessary, and beautiful book” (Michael Eric Dyson), antiracist educator Robin DiAngelo deftly illuminates the phenomenon of white fragility and “allows us to understand racism as a practice not restricted to 'bad people'" (Claudia Rankine). Referring to the defensive moves white people make when challenged racially, white fragility is characterized by emotions such as anger, fear, and guilt and by behaviors including argumentation and silence. These behaviors, in turn, function to reinstate white racial equilibrium and prevent meaningful cross-racial dialogue.

It's Complicated
Revisado: 06-03-22
I have to admit that I struggled to continue and finish this book, by my fault as well as the narration. I am a white person trying to educate myself and my family about how navigate racism, our own racism as well as that of others. I struggled because it sounded like every reaction white people have to the struggles of black people is the incorrect reaction. I also heard a podcast in which the speakers said reading books about racism will not eradicate it. It was frustrating to hear I must admit; what am I supposed to do?? In the end I came to realize that I am trying at least, by reading about racism, hearing about it, and trying to educate my kids as to what it looks like. The point is that racism is ingrained in all white people, and by slowly chipping away at it, future generations may have a chance at less. The narration of this book was flat and uninspiring. But I wouldn't expect an uplifting high energy narration either as this is a serious subject. Things really clicked for me when the author speaks about "white women's tears." That was the aha moment for me and I hope others obtain some knowledge of racism by reading this book.

Historia
A woman describes a series of encounters she has with various people in the ordinary course of her life: an ex she runs into by chance at a public forum, an Airbnb owner unsure how to interact with her guests, a stranger who seeks help comforting his elderly mother, a friend of her youth now hospitalized with terminal cancer. In each of these people, the woman finds a common need: the urge to talk about themselves and to have an audience to their experiences.

Ended too soon...
Revisado: 03-01-22
The narration of this book was fantastic, I love the deadpan way in which she narrates the ex husband. This book should be renamed "What's Your Story" as it is a series of stories woven into one main story. The reader hears the stories of neighbors, friends, exes, even cats! The one thing I felt was lacking was the ending, I totally understand why the end was not wrapped up like a gift (because the end is never pretty). I just wanted closure. Overall a beautiful book to remind us to have empathy for others.

Historians have long told the story of America’s birth as the triumph of Jefferson’s democratic ideals over the aristocratic intentions of Hamilton. Chernow presents an entirely different man, whose legendary ambitions were motivated not merely by self-interest but by passionate patriotism and a stubborn will to build the foundations of American prosperity and power.

Nothing short of genius
Revisado: 02-19-22
This book is a masterpiece. I cannot imagine the level of research and effort necessary to complete it. Every American should know their history, especially knowing that it often times repeats itself. I found many parallels to issues still happening in politics today. One of my favorite parts was the epilogue, dedicated to Eliza and her fifty years of life as a widow. I have to say I teared up when it finally finished, such a vast study of an imperative time in our nation's history. The narration was very well done, and kept the listener fully engaged. Brilliant book.

This book is a lovely binding of memoir, history, truth and heartbreak. It is beautifully told by Sasha Sagan and gives the reader a glimpse of what it was like to grow up with two amazing, supportive, nurturing, intelligent parents. The author puts herself out there for her readers, bravely exposing her innermost thoughts and vulnerabilities. Thank you.

With courage, grace, and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of World War II and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women's war. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France—a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.

As with other Kristin Hannah books, I could not stop listening. This story about sisters who endured WWII France gave me a new appreciation of the life we all take for granted today. It is an absolutely beautifully told story that I will miss.
