Miriam Margolyes never fails to give me a good laugh, though sometimes a repressed one because of being in the public. The reason I started listening to her is that I am deeply impressed by her cut-class accent. Nervously I admit that I’m quite picky when it comes to accent(s). But come on, deep down, we all like a speaker with a perfect enunciation. Besides, her straightforwardness, honesty and morality render her all the more charming. Most of us can do nothing but adore her.

It does take you some time to sort out the storyline which is a little bit confusing. But Hold on,you’ll get there. And Rosamund’s narration is an added bonus which makes the story much better than it’s really are.

Conceits can be both trying and enchanting, particularly so In Donne ‘s poetry. And Naxos has done a good job by choosing the serious-sounding Geoffrey Whitehead to narrate “ works of his penitential years” and pleasant, lilting Will Keen to recite those he wrote in his wild youth. Verses like The Flea -though made out of very ‘low’ materials- please us immensely and others such as the defiantly titled “Death Be Not Proud” encourage us to be brave in the face of the anything including death. Readers of all ages can find pleasure and refuge in John Donne’s poetry. Let’s crack on with them. Now!

Audible has found the best narrator for this book, for she has indeed an enchanted voice to bring the Enchanted April to life. Any other reader is simply unimaginable.
On the face of it, it’s just another cozy, middle/upper middle-class story. There is more to it, however. It’s more about women and their self-perception in my view. Back in London both of them have a somewhat unhappy, if not absolutely unsatisfactory, married/ widowed/aristocratic life respectively which makes them desperate for a holiday in Italy where a sunny, warm or as the title suggests an enchanted April will embrace them. And, in the end, this short stay in the foreign land does in a sense make their life better. Mrs Collins and Mrs Arbuthnot represent innumerable women who busy themselves being daughters, wives, mothers or any other roles the patriarchal society entrusts them to be, the single most important thing they forget doing is being the Self. Fortunately, this holiday wakes them up, especially Mrs Collins who in her husband’s eyes is dim-lighted and boring but actually quite intelligent, worldly and quite pleasant. The well-read, well-informed, well-off and well-connected old lady seems to me the best exemplar of how second-hand life experiences fail to make you a better person. Put it more simply, to learn from others isn’t to copy them.

Rewriting a classic can easily turn out to be a disaster. But this modern version is a near-perfection, I can’t find harsh words for it. Stephen Fry’s wonderful, first-rate narration makes it even better. I think NO narrator could have done it more beautifully. The notion alone is unbearable. Magic is the word I can justifiably use to describe his narration.

By the title I mean the grandparents in this story.
The domineering and tyrannical grandmama, on the surface, is the cause of their family tragedy. On the other hand, it is the all kind-hearted, genteel grandpapa and his inaction which made his devils of a wife and a son more daring and ruthless, causing his eldest son to die a tragic death, his grandchildren to suffer all the tyranny and harshness of his wife and all other unhappinesses. He knows his wife is bullying, destroying, and poisoning his offsprings. Still, he did nothing until the unforgiving truths was unveiled.

The narration is perfection itself.
Is there any voice he can’t do? He can be a young man, an old man, a doll of a woman and many others. Richard Armitage is a miraculous.
