Historia
Life is finally looking up for the poor relations. The Prince of Wales’ coat of arms gleams over the hotel entrance. All but one of the rooms are filled by the open-handed Prince Hugo and his entourage. They have finally reached a position comfortable enough to allow them to consider offers to buy the hotel. The poor relations’ hard-earned success, however, is in stark contrast to the plight of their latest guest, Lady Jane Fremney. The slight, beautiful youngest daughter of the Earl of Durby has been cast out of her family for refusing to marry the man her father has chosen.

Perfect End to the Series
Revisado: 01-22-22
The Poor Relations series is like a fairy tale for adults with some fascinating history thrown in, and plenty of wry commentary on the plights of the unfavoured classes (especially single women) thrown in.
Every book in the series is charming, but this one is especially so.

Historia
In this, the fourth installment of the Doyle and Acton mystery series, Detective Sergeant Doyle realizes that several apparently unrelated murders are actually "containment" murders - murders to contain an ominous scandal that could reach into the highest levels of Scotland Yard's CID. In the process of tracking down the killers, however, she comes to the unsettling conclusion that Chief Inspector Acton has committed a containment murder or two of his own.

Terrible Narration Almost Ruins It
Revisado: 02-08-21
I'm partway through this, the fourth in the series. The first three were fine, but the new narrator is almost intolerable.
Her fake Irish accent is shameful - I could do better! I won't be listening to any more books with the same narrator, which is a shame, but I suppose I could actually read for a change.

But the President is focused on the disappearance of Kiki Pew.

Hiaasen Strikes Again
Revisado: 08-27-20
This time, the inimitable Carl Hiaasen makes you laugh out loud while he skewers Florida corruption, environmental degredation, and the sort of "president" that would call label his tacky Palm Beach grift palace the "Winter White House."
I've read or listened to every Hiaasen novel for adults, and this one is in my top three!

Historia
In The Story of America, Harvard historian and New Yorker staff writer Jill Lepore investigates American origin stories - from John Smith's account of the founding of Jamestown in 1607 to Barack Obama's 2009 inaugural address - to show how American democracy is bound up with the history of print. Over the centuries, Americans have read and written their way into a political culture of ink and type. Part civics primer, part cultural history, The Story of America excavates the origins of everything from the paper ballot and the Constitution to the I.O.U. and the dictionary.

Such A Disappointment!
Revisado: 01-08-20
Horrible narrator (so nasal she makes the hair on my neck stand up) and much drivel mixed in with a little interesting information. I had two US history titles on my wish list and I definitely picked the wrong one.

What is autism: a lifelong disability or a naturally occurring form of cognitive difference akin to certain forms of genius? In truth, it is both of these things and more - and the future of our society depends on our understanding it. Wired reporter Steve Silberman unearths the secret history of autism, long suppressed by the same clinicians who became famous for discovering it, and finds surprising answers to the crucial question of why the number of diagnoses has soared in recent years.

Historia
The tsunami of cheap credit that rolled across the planet between 2002 and 2008 was more than a simple financial phenomenon: it was temptation, offering entire societies the chance to reveal aspects of their characters they could not normally afford to indulge. The Greeks wanted to turn their country into a pinata stuffed with cash and allow as many citizens as possible to take a whack at it. The Germans wanted to be even more German; the Irish wanted to stop being Irish.

Historia
And Then the Roof Caved In lays bare the truth of the credit crisis, whose defining emotion at every turn has been greed, and whose defining failure is the complicity of the U.S. government in letting that greed rule the day. Written by CNBC's David Faber, this book painstakingly details the truth of what really happened with compelling characters who offer their first-hand accounts of what they did and why they did it.
