The main character, for all her education, is a well educated white woman who is also not bright enough to apprehend criminals without killing them. Moreover, this novel is the perfect example of white privilege.

If it weren’t for Amanda, I wouldn’t have bothered listening to all four books. The continues to jump from one thing to another without tying any of the scenes together or moving the plot forward. There is nothing redeemable about the main character and her cat.

As a Black woman in the twenty-first century, reading the privileged life of a secluded community was not what I had in mind when I listened to this book. Clearly, the plot was not crafted by a writer who lived in modern-day society, otherwise, she would have included Black and other people of color as well as members from the LGBTQ community. I wish I could return this book for a full refund. A horrible choice for Audible to produce.

A Heartbreaking Disappointment

I'll be discussing specific short stories contained in this anthology. So, if you haven't heard of them or read them yet, read no further.

Now that you've been warned, I write this review with the utmost respect for Mr. Butcher and his work.

First, I love the Dresden Files; the characterization, plot, narrative style, and narrator James Marsters. I have been a devoted fan for many years. Second; at least half of the stories, i.e. Big Foot, were previously released in other anthologies. The few original short-stories in this anthology cannot begin to fill the glaring absence created by previously released short stories. Third, I don't make a lot of money and what I do earn I work hard for, so I'm more than a little miffed that I was bilked by Mr. Butcher and his publisher. Fourth, I respect writers and their time. If Mr. Butcher didn't have the time to write original short-stories, I would have saved my pennies and happily waited. Fifth, that's why this anthology was so heart-breakingly disappointing. It seems as though Mr. Butcher neither respects his fans, their time, or money.

I suggest waiting. Save your pennies until Mr. Butcher releases a full length novel or an anthology of original short-stories.

I tried. I really, really tried. But this story was too convoluted to keep my attention. Not withstanding the twisted plot, Mr. Guidall gives another stellar performance. But even Mr Guidall couldn't save this story.
