Historia
It’s Halloween night, 1984, in Coventry, Massachusetts, and two families are unraveling. Up and down the street, horrifying secrets are being revealed, and all the while, mixed in with the trick-or-treaters of all ages, four children who do not belong are walking door to door, merging with the kids of Parmenter Road. Children in vintage costumes with faded, eerie makeup. They seem terrified, and beg the neighborhood kids to hide them away, to keep them safe from The Cunning Man.

Original Story with a Bit of a Twist and Set on Halloween.
Revisado: 10-22-24
This was a perfect October listen. The story was spooky, the characters were very relatable, and there was even a bit of a twist. To top it off, this narration was some of the best I’ve ever heard!

Laurel Snow wouldn't call hunting a serial killer a vacation, but with a pile of dead bodies unearthed near her Genesis Valley, Washington, hometown, she'll take what she can get. Yet something about this case stirs her in unexpected ways. Like the startling connection she feels to Dr. Abigail Caine, a fiercely intelligent witness with a disturbing knack for making Laurel feel like she has something on her. Then there's Laurel's attraction to Huck Rivers, the fish and wildlife officer guiding her to the crime scene - and into the wilderness....

Harlequin Romance with a bit of police procedural
Revisado: 11-10-23
This was my first book from this author, and I thought it would be a police procedural with a little bit of romance mixed in, But when the romance started, things just got super silly. I like romance. I’m a sucker for a good Hallmark movie, but the book’s cheesiness was truly unbearable. In one scene, the rugged fish and wildlife officer is talking to his boss about their harrowing day finding a dead body in the snow, yet all he can think about is running his fingers through the female FBI agent’s hair. The female FBI agent who, by the way, is asleep, recuperating on his couch after almost freezing to death hiking out to find the dead body. And the dialogue is so cringe worthy at times. The female FBI agent tells a sort of hostile witness/suspect who she’s only met twice “ if you want to play smart girl chess with me…”. Smart girl chess? It’s a shame that the story devolved into cheesy romance and cringey dialogue, because the parts actually about the serial killer weren’t bad. Unfortunately there was too much of the other stuff to make the story enjoyable or even remotely believable.

Main Character is Really Hard to Like
Revisado: 12-05-22
I love cozy mysteries, but this is my first Cat Latimer mystery, and I couldn't get through it. Cat is sooooo whiney and complains about the tiniest things going wrong with her wedding like they are life and death. She cannot have a milkshake because it will make her too fat for her wedding dress, etc. So shallow. And when reading/listening to a book about an author, it's super annoying to hear them whine things like, "I never get to do the fun things cuz I'm always writing". We should all be so lucky! Speaking of writing...it is subpar as well. Cat dislikes the book she is working on, so she will forevermore call it the "crap book". That's the kind of (un)clever wordplay this book offers.

Perfect October Listen
Revisado: 10-21-22
I didn't know what to expect, as I've never listened to an anthology before, but this one was really enjoyable. While I obviously liked some stories better than others, there wasn't one that I didn't enjoy. The stories were creative and had just the right amount of spookiness for a dreary October afternoon as Halloween approaches.

Terrible Ending to a Series
Revisado: 10-21-22
This book falls into the all-too-common trap of an author just totally ruining a perfectly good series with the final installment. I don't want to give spoilers, but this book fails in soooooo many ways. First, the main character does a total 180...in smarts, morality, etc. And this complete change of character is not a product of her experiences, but rather so the author could offer this ridiculous story. Pip does really stupid things (made even more unbelievable given her smarts). Then, Ravi also does really stupid things and allows Pip to do things that also are not at all in keeping with his character. I'm usually of the opinion that readers really can't judge the choices authors make because the characters and story are their own, but when a book jumps the shark so badly that I return it to audible after really enjoying the first two books in a series, then perhaps the author really did either make awful choices or just get lazy. If you enjoyed Pip and Ravi, stop at the second book, as there is nothing redeemable here.

Historia
Strang isn’t the small, quaint town it appears to be. It’s haunted every night by a creature the townsfolk refer to as Halloween. Once the sun sets each day, Halloween emerges to collect its treats: a small, live offering from each household. The residents comply because no one wants to be the target of Halloween’s tricks.

Fun for Halloween
Revisado: 10-25-20
Short and fun for Halloween. Not really scary but still a good Halloween tale. I like this narrator, but be warned...almost every character other than the main character sounds like an 80 year older man.

Incredible Narration
Revisado: 05-02-19
This book has one of the best narrations I've heard. Angela Dawe's character voices are completely distinct. Her guys actually sound like guys, and her girls all sound different from one another. The story itself was okay. I had the big reveal figured out early on, but the writing itself was well done, so I enjoyed following along with the story. There were some weird issues with the story where it sounded like it might be taking place in the UK although it said it was set in the States. For instance, the author describes a character in the woods using a "torch", and I couldn't figure out how they had access to fire, only to realize the author was referring to a flashlight. I would listen to another book by Darcy Coates, but more importantly, I would definitely listen to another book ready by Angela Dawe.

The story took a while to get going, but once it did, I looked forward to listening. It wasn't terribly scary, but there were a couple of eerie moments and a fun twist at the end. I'm surprised there are negative reviews regarding the narration, as it was near perfect!

Historia
When a spaceship landed in an open field in the quiet mill town of Sorrow Falls, Massachusetts, everyone realized humankind was not alone in the universe. With that realization everyone freaked out for a little while. Or almost everyone. The residents of Sorrow Falls took the news pretty well. This could have been due to a certain local quality of unflappability, or it could have been that in three years the ship did exactly nothing other than sit quietly in that field, and nobody understood the full extent of this nothing the ship was doing better than the people who lived right next door.

I really enjoyed this listen. Had a smile on my face for most of it. Loved meeting Annie and the other folks from her strange little town. I also loved the narration. Sure, it was an older gentleman telling the story, but he wasn't really speaking FOR Annie, he was telling us all about her...like Grandpa recounting a story he once heard. Although the story is about a "spaceship", it is barely sci-fi. The story's success lies much more with Annie and all the other quirky characters of Sorrow Falls.

Slow and Predictable End to a Great Idea
Revisado: 09-07-17
This idea behind this story really drew me in, but the only interesting part was the plane crash. While the story still had potential in the back half, the main character's neurotic behavior (unintended, I think, which makes it worse) is too annoying to overlook. In the midst of what is supposed to be amazing things happening, all this character (an adult woman) can worry about is whether or not the cute guy likes her. Really disappointing.
