Historia
The Christmas season offers little cheer for Eileen Dunlop, an unassuming yet disturbed young woman trapped between her role as her alcoholic father's caretaker in a home whose squalor is the talk of the neighborhood and a day job as a secretary at the boys' prison, filled with its own quotidian horrors. Consumed by resentment and self-loathing, Eileen tempers her dreary days with perverse fantasies and dreams of escaping to the big city.

Slightly disappointing
Revisado: 06-18-24
I really enjoyed the first quarter of the book. It pulled me in and had interesting, multifaceted characters. By the middle of the book, I got pretty bored. The plot moved so very slowly and was definitely lacking until the final hour of the book.
I can appreciate the growth within the main character’s arc, but not enough to give an overall rating greater than 3 stars. I know it’s supposed to be set in the 1960s, but sometimes it also felt like the book itself it was written a decade or two ago.

Fantastic reimagining of songs from different eras
Revisado: 12-02-23
I really enjoyed hearing the songs they selected to re-work for this audible original. That alone made it worth the purchase, but the story telling was also great. I’ve been a fan since 2007, just before The Con came out. I was surprised I learned quite a few things about the earlier years of their music career. These two have been through an amazing journey.

Historia
"That book. It was about two women, and they fell in love with each other." And then Lily asked the question that had taken root in her, that was even now unfurling its leaves and demanding to be shown the sun: "Have you ever heard of such a thing?" Seventeen-year-old Lily Hu can't remember exactly when the question took root, but the answer was in full bloom the moment she and Kathleen Miller walked under the flashing neon sign of a lesbian bar called the Telegraph Club. America in 1954 is not a safe place for two girls to fall in love, especially not in Chinatown.

Slow but pretty good
Revisado: 05-17-23
I had really high hopes, and while it was good, it didn’t live up to the expectations.

Probably not for everyone
Revisado: 04-05-23
I enjoyed the messiness of the characters. The book certainly took some turns I didn’t expect. I really hated that they had two different people voice Big Swiss - it messed with the continuity of the character completely! I thought it was a decent book, but it’s not for everyone.
