Historia
Chip Dodd invites us to begin to know our hearts so that we better know ourselves and can live fully in relationship with others and, ultimately, with God. The journey begins with discovering the gift of the eight feelings. We have eight feelings that allow us to live fully in a tragic place - hurt, lonely, sad, anger, fear, shame, guilt, and glad. By listening to these eight God-given tools, we can be who we are made to be so we can do what we are made to do.

Like someone condensed years of counseling into one book
Revisado: 10-02-23
I ended up getting this audiobook after I attended a small event at which one of the authors spoke. It was quite eye-opening, and when couple with the book it was a powerful tool and antidote.
This book is literally like someone condensed years of counseling into one book, and cut through all of the wasted time and energy that people go through trying to figure out why they are the way they are, and how to become the way the were made to be. That’s not to say that there aren’t great counselors and helpers out there who are doing great work, nor do I want to fail to consider the impact that the willingness of the client makes, or lack thereof. I do, however, wish to emphasize how helpful the framework is in this book. The authors take into account the many factors that go into making people the way they are, including the Christian concepts of sin and the fallenness of the Genesis 3 world. Personally, the concepts within The Voice of the Heart helped me to realize some things about myself, my family of origin, and the ways in which I fail to acknowledge and respond to my various feelings, and how those failures have guided me to places and sins that I resented by didn’t understand how to fully overcome. Yes, the gospel of Jesus Christ is the solution, and I would never argue against that. The way that things presented here doesn’t contradict or try to minimize the power of the gospel to change hearts, though. Instead, it reveals how our need for redemption, and our access to it through Jesus Christ, now opens up the ability to see our broken and sinful hearts for what they truly are, speak truthfully about our condition, and begin the sanctifying process of ongoing repentance; we no longer have to be slaves to our old ways of doing life. As we discover the places where we are still holding onto our old self, we can step into the light and out of that old darkness. It’s a beautiful thing to grasp and to begin to walk fervently toward, more and more, each day!
I highly recommend this book, and I’ll be revisiting it, often.

Story starts off dropping you right in the middle of a mysterious situation that leaves you wondering if you missed something. As you continue to listen, you begin to see why.
I loved the storyline, and felt like it added a creative spin on the usual time travel story, which I found to be refreshing.

Biblical counselors have worked for decades to demonstrate that God’s resources in scripture are sufficient to help people with their counseling-related problems. In Counseling the Hard Cases, editors Stuart Scott and Heath Lambert use the true stories of real patients to show how the truths of God’s word can be released to bring help, hope, and healing into the lives of those who struggle with some of the most difficult psychiatric diagnoses.

Fantastic examples of hard cases being met with the power of the gospel
Revisado: 05-09-23
Loved this book. So many amazing stories of people who we not only helped, but healed and redeemed from many different sins, addictions, and abuses. The sufficiency of scripture is on display throughout this book, and the real life stories are incredibly encouraging and heartening. Knowing that there really isn’t any matter of the heart that God isn’t able to meet with the power and grace of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Clever storyline, and great narrator!
Revisado: 05-02-23
First, I have to say that Ray Porter never disappoints when he’s the one reading the book to you. He makes it so easy to keep track of characters because he brings each one to life.
Second, the story itself is great! Left me thinking about what I would do in similar situations. The characters feel believable and relatable. The story is captivating and keeps you thinking about it hours after you’ve set it down. I also love that it set things up for a series. Looking forward to more!

This book is absolutely incredible. The best book I’ve ever read for implementing personal change. Many books spend an overwhelming amount of time outlining a problem and a limited amount of time offering a solution. This book is the opposite. Well done, James Clear! Book club worthy!

Transformative
Revisado: 01-04-23
Daniel is a clear and concise writer who makes the information easy to digest and retain. I appreciate the brevity of his points as he trusts his reader to discern what he’s communicating rather than over communicating or over simplifying.
Russell is a great narrator and made the book easy to listen to.
I’ve noticed higher levels of personal productivity and a change in mindset as it comes to discipline. A well worthy read/listen for a large return.

Don’t be trapped by the idea that a good Christian just has to endure toxic abuse. You can walk away.
Revisado: 02-08-20
This book came at just the right time in our lives. My wife and I were literally “going crazy trying to understand crazy” as a toxic person continued to do all within their power to make us think we were crazy and evil people who had willingly and knowingly offended them. We tried humbling ourselves, considering how we may have done something wrong, even unintentionally. We apologized on multiple occasions, while still trying to stay rooted in reality. It would seem better for a moment, until the person would find something else to take offense about, essentially gaslighting their own self.
At the core of our problem was our own unspoken belief that we needed to be “good Christians” and suffer long under this person because it is what Jesus would do. Finally, a friend recommended Gary’s book and it was so freeing. We realized that enduring abuse is only allowing the abuser to continue to sin against us. We learned how even Jesus walked away at times, and instead spent his energy doing the will of His Father, rather than getting thrown off course by everyone who disagreed with Him.
We were reminded to be aware of our own response to toxic people, and avoid becoming toxic ourselves by continually looking to Jesus for our identity and worth.
We are so grateful for this book, and highly recommend it to anyone and everyone who may find themselves completely off balance and suffering from being enslaved to the anxiety and fear that comes with a toxic relationship, as well as those who may not yet be aware that they have been going through life as a toxic person, trying to control and motivate people by shame and disgrace.

One of the best big-picture books on preaching
Revisado: 08-31-16
Tim Keller has done a marvelous job of getting to the heart of preaching; it's all about the glory and greatness of Jesus, and what God has done, and is doing, through Him.
I will likely listen to the audiobook of this, many times down the line.
Keller does a remarkable job of avoiding the trap of, "It's either this or that, not both/and", that we Christians (and human beings in general) are so prone toward. He maintains that m
