Historia
The year is 1739. Eliza Lucas is sixteen years old when her father leaves her in charge of their family’s three plantations in rural South Carolina and then proceeds to bleed the estates dry in pursuit of his military ambitions. Tensions with the British, and with the Spanish in Florida, just a short way down the coast, are rising, and slaves are starting to become restless. Her mother wants nothing more than for their South Carolina endeavor to fail so they can go back to England. Soon her family is in danger of losing everything.

a compelling story that enriches our American history. Most of us know what indigo is but know nothing about it and certainly nothing at all about the remarkable young woman who gave us such a gift

great storytelling of stories not often told
Revisado: 11-11-24
Elif Shafak has given us a gift of the heart, a book that, long after you have read it and put it down, will keep coming back to mind. Her characters and descriptions are stirring and memorable. Her love of Istanbul's grit and glittering glory provide her readers a backdrop for loving her characters, figures the world has too casually discarded as unlovable.
Alix Dunmore's reading and performance is superb. All in all, a wonderful novel

Historia
Late one night, Commissario Guido Brunetti's telefonino rings. A woman's body has been found in a Spartan apartment on Campo San Giacomo dell'Orio. Brunetti sees some signs of force on the old woman, but they could just as easily have been from the radiator near where she fell. When the medical examiner rules that the woman died of a heart attack, it seems there is nothing to investigate.

Historia
As a Hillary voter, a New York Times reporter, and frequent attendee at her local gay bars, Nellie Bowles fit right in with her San Francisco neighbors and friends—until she started questioning whether the progressive movement she knew and loved was actually helping people. When her colleagues suggested that asking such questions meant she was “on the wrong side of history,” Bowles did what any reporter worth her salt would do: she started investigating for herself. The answers she found were stranger—and funnier—than she expected.

Timely and perspicacious. That this gem of a book was narrated by the author herself made the chapters especially personable. I now intend to read more from Nellie Bowles; she merits attention.

Very nearly worthless
Revisado: 12-04-22
This attempt at a travel guide lacks any real guidance. The list of suggested sites to see is annoyingly short and and mystifyingly incomplete. The author's primary qualification seems simply be that he has an Irish name. He provides little cultural or historical insight and instead spends far too much effort on telling us how complete and comprehensive he will be.... later ,...though he never gets around to actually doing so. This disappointing travel trinket is targeted at older people who have little to no travel experience but believe that buying a guide might assuage their apprehensions. Bottom line: the book's suggestions are shallow, repetitive,. and ultimately unhelpful.

Darting back and forth across the icy North Atlantic, Compass Rose played a deadly cat-and-mouse game with packs of German U-boats lying in wait beneath the ocean waves. Packed with tension and vivid descriptions of agonizing U-boat hunts, this tale of the most bitter and chilling campaign of the war tells of ordinary men who had to master their own fears before they could face a brutal menace - one that would strike without warning from the deep.

This ship is sinking
Revisado: 10-28-22
I was a fan of S. Thomas Russell, He wrote a really good first book in this series; the second was nearly as good as the first, But, this fourth book is a disappointment. Until the Sea Shall Give Up Her Dead did not feel as if the same author had written it. The wind seems to have blown out of his sails. In book four, the main character, Charles Hayden fails to live up to the character's previous standards and values. The whole tone of this book is inconsistent and disturbingly different from those before.
In an audiobook, narration is nearly as important as plot or prose. Daniel Philpott's interpretation was unsatisfactory. Perhaps his talents would be better suited to narrating less masculine characters.
