Historia
For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand.

Historia
Patrick, or Gay Uncle Patrick (GUP, for short), has always loved his niece, Maisie, and nephew, Grant. That is, he loves spending time with them when they come out to Palm Springs for weeklong visits, or when he heads home to Connecticut for the holidays. But in terms of caretaking and relating to two children, no matter how adorable, Patrick is, honestly, overwhelmed. So when tragedy strikes and Maisie and Grant lose their mother and Patrick's brother has a health crisis of his own, Patrick finds himself suddenly taking on the role of primary guardian.

Historia
Dating back to slavery, Edgefield County, South Carolina - a place "easy to pass by on the way somewhere else" - has been home to generations of Lanhams. In The Home Place, listeners meet these extraordinary people, including Drew himself, who over the course of the 1970s falls in love with the natural world around him. As his passion takes flight, however, he begins to ask what it means to be "the rare bird, the oddity".

Beautiful and poignant

Loved this book. The writing is just beautiful - a lyrical recitation with poignant insight and thoughtful reflection. The author brings a welcome perspective that is often missing in the scientific and eco-aware circles. Highly recommend.

Truly gob smacking. So very insightful and helpful in understanding how we got opioid crisis we have today and the impunity of the family who helped birth it. Incredibly thorough, well written, and a gripping performance by the author. Highly recommend.

Historia
Plenty of experts argue that anyone who wants to develop a skill, play an instrument, or lead their field should start early, focus intensely, and rack up as many hours of deliberate practice as possible. But a closer look at research on the world’s top performers shows that early specialization is the exception, not the rule. David Epstein examined the world’s most successful athletes, artists, musicians, inventors, forecasters and scientists. He discovered that in most fields—especially those that are complex and unpredictable—generalists, not specialists, are primed to excel.

Historia
Combining biography, history, and politics, Our Man Down in Havana investigates the real story behind Greene's fictional one. This includes his many visits to a pleasure island that became a revolutionary island, turning his chance involvement into a political commitment. Exploiting a wealth of archival material and interviews with key protagonists, Our Man Down in Havana delves into the story behind and beyond the author's prophetic Cuban tale, focusing on one slice of Greene's manic life: a single novel and its complex history.

Interesting but convoluted and droned on
Revisado: 10-30-22
I have not read the book whose backstory this book covers. I found it hard at times to keep track of who was who and whether they were on the fictional story or part of the backstory. The book also seemed repetitious at times, with some chapters repeating background details/story that were already discussed previously. Felt like I learned some history though very much through the lens of a pro-Castro observer (which is part of the backstory).

We all lived through a different version of this story. I prefer this version 1000 fold. Classic Hiaasen, acerbic and insightful and laugh out loud characters. Extra funny for anyone who has spent any time in and around Palm Beach.

Historia
Most people want to avoid thinking about death, but Caitlin Doughty - a 20-something with a degree in medieval history and a flair for the macabre - took a job at a crematory, turning morbid curiosity into her life’s work. With an original voice that combines fearless curiosity and mordant wit, Caitlin tells an unusual coming-of-age story full of bizarre encounters, gallows humor, and vivid characters (both living and very dead).

We all die - face it and read the book
Revisado: 07-04-21
It may cause some to squirm in their seats but death is a universal experience and the author seeks to provide readers with an understanding of what is and what could be normal death practice. An entertaining listen, augmented by the author’s voice, it throws the door open on a topic we will all experience and need to get comfortable with while we still are sentient.Well done.

Thought provoking and authentic insight
Revisado: 03-28-21
I enjoyed the author’s rendition of her book, bringing her own voice really augmented the listening experience. Which seems appropriate given one of the main lessons in the book: we must actually listen to the Black community, giving space to their perspectives and lived experiences. An insightful read that should be required for all members of League of Women Voters and other civic-minded and voter-focused organizations.

Historia
What happens when the President of the United States governs one Tweet at a time? When the elected leader of the free world may not have a firm grasp on the names of government agencies, much less an understanding of their intricate inner-workings? In the days following the 2016 inauguration, government personnel searched for answers that didn’t exist, while White House staff scoured halls for employees who would never be appointed.

We are so lucky and don’t even realize it
Revisado: 02-27-21
This story casts some light on an overlooked and under appreciated strength of our society. I had no idea that life today was enabled by work started at the USDA, despite having a degree in animal science from a Merrill Act university. I have a friend who was plucked from the ocean hours after their small plane went down off the FL keys; their rescue is no doubt likely due to Art Allen in the final chapter. I had never thought to think of how or who made that possible. Thanks to Michael Lewis for this book and especially to the civil servants doing their jobs. I am grateful.
