Historia
For Amy Ettinger, ice cream is not just a delicious snack but a circumstance and a time of year - frozen forever in memory. As the youngest child and only girl, ice cream embodied unstructured summers, freedom from the tyranny of her classmates, and a comforting escape from her chaotic, demanding family. Now as an adult and journalist, her love of ice cream has led to a fascinating journey to understand ice cream's evolution and enduring power, complete with insight into the surprising history behind America's early obsession with ice cream.

Left me Cold
Revisado: 07-03-17
I was hoping for an ice cream adventure but this was a memoir by a mean girl. Too much about her own experience which was much ado about nothing. She clearly didn't take off her sunglasses when she visited Milwaukee or she would have discovered more beauty and great ice cream in addition to the custard. Her superficial presentation of my own foodie backyard made me doubt her analysis of others. Also, narrators need to know how to pronounce people's names. Bud Selig was the Commissioner of Baseball! His name is pronounced like see not sell. Even Gilles Custard was mispronounced. If you want an ice cream adventure talk to local foodies and leave this book on the shelf.

Historia
In White Trash, Nancy Isenberg upends assumptions about America's supposedly class-free society. Poor whites were central to the rise of the Republican Party in the early 19th century, and the Civil War itself was fought over class issues nearly as much as it was fought over slavery. Reconstruction pitted poor white trash against newly freed slaves, which factored in the rise of eugenics. These poor were at the heart of New Deal reforms and LBJ's Great Society; they haunt us in reality TV shows like Here Comes Honey Boo Boo and Duck Dynasty.

Historia
Bryan Stevenson was a young lawyer when he founded the Equal Justice Initiative, a legal practice dedicated to defending those most desperate and in need: the poor, the wrongly condemned, and women and children trapped in the farthest reaches of our criminal justice system. One of his first cases was that of Walter McMillian, a young man who was sentenced to die for a notorious murder he insisted he didn’t commit. The case drew Bryan into a tangle of conspiracy, political machination, and legal brinksmanship—and transformed his understanding of mercy and justice forever.

Candidates take notice
Revisado: 03-13-16
Bryan Stevenson articulates problems and solutions regarding the racial divide in this country more eloquently than any of the people currently campaigning to be President. Some passages would work as eloquent campaign speeches, were he in the race.

Historia
Tepper enjoys sitting in his car, reading his newspaper in peace. His car always seems to be parked in a prime spot and other drivers want to know if Tepper is going out. He isn't. This drives some people crazy - including the mayor - but leads others to think Tepper harbors some hidden wisdom. The tale that emerges is "refreshing and completely likable."

Calvin Trillin reads his own prose in inimitable style. Each sentence has triple meaning - the words, the clever inferences, and finally the nuances from his voice. Worth listening to at least three times.
