Historia
A year has passed since LAPD detective Renée Ballard quit the force in the face of misogyny, demoralization, and endless red tape. But after the chief of police himself tells her she can write her own ticket within the department, Ballard takes back her badge, leaving “the Late Show” to rebuild and lead the cold case unit at the elite Robbery-Homicide Division.

Harry and Rene do it again
Revisado: 11-29-22
Another fine Bosch mystery. The only issue I have is the audio recording is horrible. Evidently they recorded the voices in different studios because the characters never seem like they are actually talking to one another and the overall sound quality is different. The last recording was the same. Titus seems mostly to just be reading the lines with no investment in the part.

Historia
There’s chaos in Hollywood at the end of the New Year’s Eve countdown. Working her graveyard shift, LAPD detective Renée Ballard waits out the traditional rain of lead as hundreds of revelers shoot their guns into the air. Only minutes after midnight, Ballard is called to a scene where a hardworking auto shop owner has been fatally hit by a bullet in the middle of a crowded street party.

Good book; uneven readers
Revisado: 12-22-21
Lakin is a great reader; Welliver was horrible - like he recorded it separately and just read it to get it over as fast as possible. A good and engaging story.

Kimani reimagines the rise and fall of colonialism in Africa by telling the story of the birth of Kenya's railroad. Set in the shadow of Kenya's independence from Great Britain, Dance of the Jakaranda reimagines the rise and fall of colonialism and the special circumstances that brought black, brown, and white men together to lay the railroad that heralded the birth of the nation.

Revisado: 04-20-17
If you could sum up Dance of the Jakaranda in three words, what would they be?
Kimani weaves a rich, intimate portrait of Kenya over more than a century, all tied to the construction of the Mombasa to Lake Victoria railroad.

In The Worst Hard Time, Timothy Egan put the environmental disaster of the Dust Bowl at the center of a rich history, told through characters he brought to indelible life. Now he performs the same alchemy with The Big Burn, the largest-ever forest fire in America, a tragedy that cemented Teddy Roosevelt's legacy.

Stretching a single event into a too-long story
Revisado: 04-01-12
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Author fell in love with every little fact about the Big Burn and just couldn't leave any out. Book would have been better if it were shorter.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
Take out all the repetition about the Big Burn -- author seemed to feel we needed to hear the same thing several times.
Have you listened to any of Robertson Dean’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
A fine narrator

Revisado: 04-01-12

Author did a terrific job of taking the facts about a truly weird country and weaving them into a believable and exciting story. I enjoyed every minute of it.
What about the narrators’s performance did you like?
A very fine narrator. Gave the book a lot of punch and drama.

Historia
An award-winning historian and author, Paul Hendrickson here turns his attention to one of America’s most cherished literary icons, Ernest Hemingway. Drawing on previously unpublished material, Hendrickson focuses on Hemingway’s life in its twilight, just prior to his suicide, and the seemingly singular constant in the man’s life: his boat, Pilar. On this vessel, Hemingway would entertain and travel, but it would also be the scene of some of his greatest tragedies.

He manges to make Hemmingway boring
Revisado: 04-01-12
Is there anything you would change about this book?
Book would be best read abridged. He fell in love with every fact he found and filled the pages with them. He needed a good editor to prune it back.
Would you be willing to try another book from Paul Hendrickson? Why or why not?
Not at this point.
What does Jonathan Davis bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
A fine reader, stuck with a too-long book.

Historia
Nearly six hundred years ago, a short, genial, cannily alert man in his late 30s took a very old manuscript off a library shelf, saw with excitement what he had discovered, and ordered that it be copied. That book was the last surviving manuscript of an ancient Roman philosophical epic by Lucretius—a beautiful poem containing the most dangerous ideas: that the universe functioned without the aid of gods, that religious fear was damaging to human life, and that matter was made up of very small particles.

Historia
From the first cannonballs fired by American warships at North African pirates to the conquest of Falluja by the Marines, and from the early American explorers who probed the sources of the Nile to the diplomats who strove for Arab-Israeli peace, the United States has been dramatically involved in the Middle East. For well over two centuries, American statesmen, merchants, and missionaries, both men and women, have had a profound impact on the shaping of this crucial region.

This is an extraordinary story about the US's involvement in the Middle East. I never realized the extent of this involvement and how present day actions are a logical continuation of what we have been doing there for over 200 years. Scary.
