Overall, this book is excellent and well worth the listen. The narrator is outstanding. The story is fast paced and keeps you wanting to continue listening. The characters are compelling. Although the author gets the big picture right, there are some details about foster care, child protective services, dropping out of high school before 18, etc. that aren't accurate.

Eric Forner provides a good, well researched overview of a critical period in US history. However, I would have appreciated more historical context and analysis. I can only give this book 4 stars because If you want to read/ listen to a 5 star book about reconstruction, I recommend reading W.E.B. Du Bois's Black Reconstruction because it offers more extensive historical context, analysis, and is far more eloquently written.

This powerful, passionate, comprehensive, and thorough description and analysis of Reconstruction is by far the best book that I've read/ listened to on the subject. Although most historians consider Eric Foiner's book on Reconstruction to be the essential reading on this period, I found Du Bois's book to be far superior in terms of providing historical context, thorough analysis, and the shear eloquence of his writing. This book remains highly relevant for helping to understand our nation's current challenges.

Informative, in depth look at the Civil Rights Movement

Reading this book was extremely educational. I thought that I was knowledgeable about the Civil Rights Movement, yet I learned so much from listening to this book. Both narrators, but especially the male narrator, give an outstanding performance. I loved learning about the courageous and less known civil rights leaders such as Barbara Johns, Diane Nash, John Beville, and Robert Moses as well as some of the more famous leaders such as John Lewis, Roy Wilkins, and of course Dr. King. I also appreciated the author's candid analysis of the Kennedy administration's lip service support of civil rights. My only critique is that the book contains many digressions that can feel tedious to listen to and the narrative jumps around a lot between years, people, and events so it can be difficult at times to follow. Nevertheless, the book is definitely worth listening too - I wish that I had learned about it sooner.

John Meacham does an outstanding job helping the reader understand President George H. W. Bush as a person. The book offers a balanced portrayal of President Bush's life, My only critique of the book is that I personally would have liked a more in depth discussion of the events during President Bush's presidency, especially on the domestic front, such as the passage of The Americans with Disabilities Act and his educational reforms. I would have also liked to better understand President Bush's hesitancy to raise taxes on the wealthiest Americans and why he opposed capital gains tax.

This well written memoir offers the reader insights and understanding about the life, character, personality, and motivations of President Obama as well as a front row seat of the first 2 years of his presidency. I appreciated President Obama's honesty, self awareness , and self reflection. I previously read The Audacity of Hope and I much preferred this memoir. I look forward to reading the second volume when it is releasrd.

This eloquent, inspirational story describes the story of a modern US hero, John Lewis, during the civil rights era. I highly reccomend this outstanding book. I wish John Meacham would write a complete biography of John Lewis's entire life including his years in Congress and why he chose to ally himself with the Clintons.

I strongly disagree with many of the other reviews that accuse this biography of being biased against George W. Bush. On the contrary, this book offers a balanced perspective on Bush's successes and failures. Although I still strongly disagree with Bush's war against Iraq, I have more respect for Bush as a human being and a better understanding of why he made the choices that he did. This book described many of Bush's positive accomplishments during his presidency about which I was unaware. If anything, I found fhe book too complimentary of NCLB, an educational policy that in reality had many flaws. I highly reccomend this book for anyone that wants to better understand the presidency of George W. Bush. The book is also fast paced and held my attention throughout. The reader does an excellent job and is a joy to listen to.

A History of the CIA and Presidential Abuse of Power

Revisado: 04-02-24

Overall, this book provides a solid overview of the history of the CIA from its founding in the 1940's through the George W. Bush administration. The book is well researched and contains important information. In the end, the book is more an indictment of the abuses of power perpetrated by Presidents Eisenhower, JFK, LBJ, Nixon, Reagan, and George W. Bush as well as Robert Kennedy and Henry Kissinger. The book is fast paced throughout - especially beginning with Eisenhower's presidency and Allen Dulles. My only critique of the book is I would have appreciated more historical context and analysis of all the major events covered by the book. At times, the book moved too quickly and left the reader wanting more context, clarification, and analysis of why certain actions were taken and the consequences of those actions. Sometimes the book felt like a series of headlines instead of offering the depth, context, and analysis of great historical works such as Robert Caro's biography of LBJ.

Although this book presents some interesting insights and facts about the story of how and why the US became entangled in the Vietnam War, much of the book is more focused on analyzing the biographies of a huge host of players from the Kennedy and Johnson administrations instead of telling the narrative of the how and why of US policy in Vietnam. The book seems more focused on offering the reader a who's who in the Nixon and Johnson administrations. Many of the administration officials scrutinized in this book are relatively minor players in the larger sweep of history. Essential questions such as the story of how the Johnson administration made the decision to conscript US citizens to serve in Vietnam against their will are not addressed at all. The narrative structure is also confusing because the story jumps around significantly between 1945 and 1968 and all the intervening years with a primary focus on the Kennedy and Johnson administrations. Also,, most of the book focuses on 1961 - early 1965 and only briefly touches upon the the story of the Johnson administration's continued escalation from 1965 - 1968 is the epilogue.
