New favorite
Revisado: 12-04-24
This one held my attention better than any in a long time. I barely took a break from it until chapter 37. Chapter 37 hit way too close to home and I had to take a break from books for a few days.
The three stories intermix beautifully. The characters are all fighting their past and handle it very differently.

Historia
Upon awakening in an abandoned lab, Evelyn is empowered by a system that grants her bloody magical powers in exchange for finishing missions and consuming her enemies. She knows one truth: no matter the cost, she will advance. She'll manipulate allies and spread demonic corruption with a smile if that's what it takes to level up. Her first mission is to escape the lab's other newly born creations. But once she steps foot into the world outside of the lab, she must contend with people who forbid her existence and who will work to eradicate those with her powers from the face of the planet.

litrpg meets SCP
Revisado: 11-29-24
The book itself is an interesting litrpg. Probably one of the better ones. The SCP angle hits pretty early on and at first wasn't too obvious. a few things here and there. At some point, it felt like it was exactly an SCP thing from the perspective of the object.
Pick it up if you like litrpg and are curious about SCP.

Butcher impresses again
Revisado: 07-23-24
I was looking to see what books I hadn't read yes with Dresden when I saw this series. I love the way magic works in this series. It's not magic but it's an interesting take on how to do magic like things. I appreciate why the characters made their decisions and how it affects others. I appreciate probably the most badass female character I've ever seen and one of the more interesting ones in the same book. I'll let you decide which description is for the aunt and which is for the love interest. No, I'm not naming her on purpose, read the book and find out why. Tavi needs to grow up a little but what some might not understand is that he is a kid. See if he grows up in the next few books before complaining.
Butcher is probably the best author I've ever seen show someone's flaws without writing out what they are. Other characters might talk about them but Butcher is great at showing you flaws through writing and letting you notice them before anything else. Tavi makes a mistake that lots of kids make and it isn't until later in the book that he's called on it. You get to see it happen without being told he's being foolish so you can decide for yourself if he's foolish and Butcher learned how to do that well.

No memory, no resources, no secret lair, and no time to find her feet: this is the story of a self-made villain, and her fall into strife. Fleeing from unknown enemies and an early death, she emerges into a city gone dark in the aftermath of a complete systems failure. Hounded by heroes, menaced by gangs, and helped by the most unlikely of allies, she claws her way up from weakness to strength and works to build a better future for those who deserve it.

Superheroes are just Wrestlers
Revisado: 07-23-24
Tried to avoid spoilers but the second paragraph is a gray area on that.
Kayfabe is a wonderful way to put it. I do appreciate focusing on the "villain". After all, sometimes a good villain is just a hero that went too far. This book stands great on its own and I prefer it over the other books in the series.
I truly appreciate how Dire tries. Dire is a good person, sure, murder might be going too far but not in Dire's eyes. Dire is doing whatever is possible to protect those on her side and get the answers she needs. I definitely understand Dire's frustrations and can empathize which is always an amazing thing for a character, especially when you wouldn't go as far as them. I see the logic, I enjoy the character and I don't appreciate the fools in her way.

Casting necromancy without ever learning how to isn't supposed to be possible. A starving orphan girl named Vita is somehow managing it anyway, and she's not sure if this is going to be the solution to her life's problems or a horrifying, spiraling mess of problems she can hardly conceive.

Adorable and dark
Revisado: 07-23-24
This whole series is both adorable and a little dark. It's so common to have necromancers and they're always the same. Having one who's just doing her best is wonderful. Feared, a little crazy, and trying to protect what matters. It gets a little murky with who the villains are and it's wonderful. I'll be listening again at some point and I hope many more find this absolute gem.
Fair warning, this kid goes through a lot and if that's not for you, that's okay.

Historia
One day, I’m married, living in Seattle, and magic isn’t real. The next, I’m divorced and living in the guest room of my ex’s hotter-than-sin cousin’s place in Savannah and talking to an animated skeleton named Robert. I have to admit, Robert isn’t my worst date. At 41, I didn’t think I’d be starting over. But I’ll be damned if my ex thinks I’m down and out because he pulled a fast one on me. When a job comes my way that offers me a chance to use my childhood training in the shadow world, I take it.

A good one to stumble upon
Revisado: 07-23-24
This one I found by complete accident. I don't remember how it popped up but I decided to give it a chance and was it worth it. I am very happy to have listened and I listened to the next one but I haven't listened to the whole series because this isn't my usual put something on for background noise and only sort of pay attention. It's a good book and I'm sure I'll get around to the entire series at some point.

Stop putting it off
Revisado: 07-23-24
I had been meaning to listen to or read this book for a long time before I ended up picking it up. It was one of those things where I had some knowledge of the book beforehand and just never got around to it. This was remarkable and Chrichton did another amazing job of finding a way to make talking about science and theory just as interesting as what was happening in the story.
Personally not my favorite of his books but definitely a book that surprised me with how much I enjoyed it.

Historia
In a world full to bursting with would-be heroes, Jim couldn't be less interested in saving the day. His fireballs fizzle. He's awfully grumpy. Plus, he's been dead for about 60 years. When a renegade necromancer wrenches him from eternal slumber and into a world gone terribly, bizarrely wrong, all Jim wants is to find a way to die properly, once and for all. On his side, he's got a few shambling corpses, an inept thief, and a powerful death wish. But he's up against tough odds....

Surprisingly good
Revisado: 07-23-24
I listened to this book while doing other things, background noise for work or games. That being said, I paused what I was doing to pay attention to this book multiple times because I'd notice something that made previous parts of the book more interesting because of looking at them from a different direction.

MC was actually interesting
Revisado: 01-23-23
A lot of what happened in the boon wasn't the best. Sure it makes sense and was fun but there was a lot of down time. I understand that he was growing, that he was learning. This is shown in the second book. it's like the first book was setup for a much better second book. on its own, it wasn't terrible, the MC grew as a person, did a lot of believable things in this world. He overcame challenges using wit more than raw power. The MC was by far the most interesting thing in this book. As for the voice actor, didn't love him but he suited the book, the noises made me chuckle at how bad they were at first but got a little annoying later on.

For a thousand years the ash fell and no flowers bloomed. For a thousand years the Skaa slaved in misery and lived in fear. For a thousand years the Lord Ruler, the "Sliver of Infinity," reigned with absolute power and ultimate terror, divinely invincible. Then, when hope was so long lost that not even its memory remained, a terribly scarred, heart-broken half-Skaa rediscovered it in the depths of the Lord Ruler's most hellish prison.

long winded
Revisado: 12-22-22
So, I don't hate it, honestly I couldn't tell you what it's about. between the narrator being so unemotional and it having the Robert Jordan problem of going on and on, I just couldn't care about the story. I'm vaugly aware of what was going on but I kept on tuning it out and ended up giving up partway through and started using it as a sleep aid. If you don't mind it going on and on with very slow pacing, the story seems interesting, I like a couple of the characters and like the parts where the mist is involved. The action parts are good, not as much excessive description, I actually started caring about the characters until I got bored of the narrator.
