The Courage to Be Disliked shows you how to unlock the power within yourself to become your best and truest self, change your future and find lasting happiness. patronising and outdated
Revisado: 10-03-24
look, some of these ideas are all right. but all of it is at least 100 years out of date in the field of psychology. it denies trauma, which is one of the most cutting edge fields of current psychology. denying trauma as the root cause of most mental illness is just, if you'll excuse my language, completely insane.

Historia
It’s officially booty o’clock, I’m alone again in my kitchen choking down a slice of terrible chocolate cake…and I’m pretty sure I just got drunk texted by the man I have a ginormous crush on. I’ve been daydreaming about Eliot Hoffman’s dimples for two months, and even though I’m sure this was a mistake on his end, it doesn’t mean it’s not an opportunity on mine. It’s the middle of the night, and I just wanna talk to him. So I text him back.

So Refreshing
Revisado: 03-30-23
I genuinely have never read a romance book with this kind of dynamic. It was really refreshing to see a break from gendered stereotypes! It was also funny, sweet, silly, lighthearted, and just what I needed when I felt so down.

Historia
Jo Beckett is looking for love. She's fallen for a few boys, but for some reason, they've never fallen for her. One night, at a party she didn't even want to go to, she finds out the truth. Those boys, who are on the wrestling team she manages, consider her just a “practice girl”—the popular term for girl who’s good enough to hook up with but not to date.

Nothing happens
Revisado: 01-29-23
Nothing happens, and in a story like this where you don't care at all about the characters, that's the worst. I liked the messages to young girls but it felt like a PSA, not a novel.

Nothing particularly wrong with it
Revisado: 10-24-21
This novel brought up some interesting ideas and thoughts. I just have to say that sadly I didn't connect with the characters really at all. I liked it for the story and critique of capitalism, but it could have been great if the characters had been compelling. It wasn't just that the movie star guy was unlikable, I just got so bored hearing about him, I didn't care at all.

Historia
He doesn't believe in happy endings. She's lost her faith that they exist. But could they find one together? January is a hopeless romantic who likes narrating her life as if she's the heroine in a blockbuster movie. Augustus is a serious literary type who thinks true love is a fairy-tale. January and Augustus are not going to get on.

I wish I liked this
Revisado: 10-24-21
I am so sad that I disagree with everyone on this one. I just was so bored halfway through I couldn't finish it. I didn't care about the characters. It started off strongly but their relationship was so tepid and the conflict was so forced.

Historia
Nature Poem follows Teebs - a young, queer, American Indian (or NDN) poet - who can't bring himself to write a nature poem. For the reservation-born, urban-dwelling hipster, the exercise feels stereotypical, reductive, and boring. He hates nature. He prefers city lights to the night sky. He'd slap a tree across the face. He'd rather write a mountain of hashtag punchlines about death and give head in a pizza-parlor bathroom; he'd rather write odes to Aretha Franklin and Hole.

I had read this book of poetry before and adored it, but it's even better hearing the author perform it. He made me laugh and also you could tell what parts he put the most feeling into. Excellent.

Historia
At home full-time with her two-year old son while his father travels for work, a woman finds herself struggling with solitude, monotony and exhaustion. If she has to manage one more bedtime alone, she fears she will lose her mind. So far, so familiar, you might say? But one night, a strange metamorphosis occurs.

Disappointing
Revisado: 10-24-21
I can tell the author of this novel really, desperately wanted to be interesting and shocking with this book, but I am sad to say it was neither of those things. I ended up listening on 2 times speed because I was so bored, which from this premise you'd hope wouldn't happen. It actually wasn't weird enough for me. The reader doing the kids' voice made my stomach turn every time, it made me truly hate him, which I know was also the authors fault. Overall I was left with the impression that this would have made a much, much better short story/novella.

Historia
It’s the year 2000 in a city aglitter with wealth and possibility; what could be so terribly wrong? Our narrator has many of the advantages of life: young, thin, pretty, a recent Columbia graduate, she lives in an apartment on the Upper East Side of Manhattan paid for, like everything else, by her inheritance. But there is a vacuum at the heart of things, and it isn’t just the loss of her parents in college, or the way her Wall Street boyfriend treats her, or her sadomasochistic relationship with her alleged best friend.

Best audible experience in a while
Revisado: 10-24-21
Failure after failure, disappointment after disappointment, this book saved me from that slump. It's unique and compelling and nauseating and well-written, and the reader was great. If you think a good book hinges on the need for a female main character to be a puppy-saving baby-kissing tepid wash basin full of greywater then I wouldn't recommend this book, but if you like thinking critically then I would.

Historia
When the only other virgin in her group of friends loses it at Keely's own 18th birthday party, she's inspired to take things into her own hands. She wants to have that experience too (well, not exactly like that - but with someone she trusts and actually likes), so she's going to need to find the guy, and fast. Problem is, she's known all the boys in her small high school forever, and it's kinda hard to be into a guy when you watched him eat crayons in kindergarten.

Boring characters and writing
Revisado: 07-04-20
The worst part of this book isn't even that the book doesn't actually match the promised premise in the description, or that it's supposed "sex-positive" attitude is actually a farce - it's that the characters suck and their relationship was extremely boring.
You can't claim to be sex-positive and then still have the main character act high and mighty, the only "smart" girl, the only "pure" virgin, who still very much waits to have sex with a guy she's known her whole life once she knows she's in love with him. The book also strongly looks down on the only character who actually is sexually promiscuous. The big stupid twist is that Andrew is also a virgin, making their first time "so pure"! This book is just puritanical bull disguised as feminist and forward thinking.
I hated it for this reason, but mainly, there just wasn't a single likable character, and it was really poorly written.

Pretty much what you'd expect
Revisado: 07-04-20
I started out quite liking this book, but I guess the continued levels of saccharine blandness didn't really do it for me. There could have been way more tension between the characters, because most of the book, especially the second half, just felt like an expository waste of time - like the author didn't really know how to resolve the story, so she brought it to a very slow, boring halt. It's a shame because the cute premise was a lot of fun, and at the start I liked the tension between Jack and what's her name, but they both ended up being really boring, and so did their interactions. I listened to the last few chapters on 2 times speed.
