Need medical reader
Revisado: 05-02-23
The content was good and helpful but I will need to read the actual book, which just arrived in the mail, and look into the research studies, before really knowing what I think. The reader was good overall but he mispronounced an obscene amount of medical terms. He even mispronounced “methylene” once, and also the word “urine”. That was good for comedic value. I think the reader needs to become willing to look up terms in advance of recording and he also needs to become willing to make corrections.

Great except mispronunciations of medical terms
Revisado: 12-06-20
Wonderful book! The voice person here did a good job in general, BUT WHY OH WHY didn’t he look up to proper pronunciations of the medical terms??? I mean, almost EVERY medical term was mispronounced! Drove me up the wall to hear the authoritative voice, authoritative messages, but with ignorant and lazy (cuz like—dude, this is your JOB, so LOOK IT UP, okay?) pronunciations. But that aside, the book is very good. I enjoyed it very much. I wish he’d gone into a lot more detail regarding “the solution” but I’m happy with what I got out of this.

I usually take a long time to get through a book. I hit a wall a while back with Trump and didn’t want to hear anymore—I had all the info I needed and it was no longer helping me. I was reluctant to try this book for that reason but I heard an intriguing interview with the author and after sleeping on it, I bought it. I could not stop listening! This is soooo well-written, so compelling, so human, and so insightful! I particularly appreciate the author’s use of the phrase “toxic positivity” and her examination of this manifestation of narcissism. I’m so very grateful to the author. She created a thing of beauty, something that has me feeling, for a short while at least, not the least bit alone.

Historia
Over his decades of experience as a therapist and mindfulness meditation practitioner, Dr. Christopher Germer has learned a paradoxical lesson: We all want to avoid pain, but letting it in and responding compassionately to our own imperfections are essential steps on the path to healing. This wise and eloquent book illuminates the power of self-compassion and offers creative, scientifically grounded strategies for putting it into action.

This is truly excellent. I would really recommend purchasing the hard copy of the book, though, because the meditations are not presented here in a way that can be used as guided meditations. When listening to an audiobook, we usually can't stop and meditate on the spot, while the instructions are fresh in the mind (or even to write down the instructions). I'll be buying the book for the meditations and the self assessments, as well as other lists and resources. It's easier to thumb back through a physical book when previous points are brought up again and whatnot. But being in a place in my life right now where I cannot sit and read anything alone, this audiobook plus the hard copy will do fine. Again--freaking fantastic book.

Shrill is an uproarious memoir, a feminist rallying cry in a world that thinks gender politics are tedious and that women, especially feminists, can't be funny. Coming of age in a culture that demands women be as small, quiet, and compliant as possible - like a porcelain dove that will also have sex with you - writer and humorist Lindy West quickly discovered that she was anything but. With inimitable good humor, vulnerability, and boundless charm, Lindy boldly shares how to survive in a world where not all stories are created equal.

I really appreciated her feminist perspective and her honesty. Her sense of humor was pretty fun. That said, it's a drag in places...mostly I just have trouble relating when folks talk about how they cheated on almost everyone they ever dated, and cheated with people who were also in relationships.

Fantastic
Revisado: 04-27-16
Forward covers a lot of ground here and gives a lot of practical advice. I wish Toxic In-Laws and Emotional Blackmail were also available on audio.
I do feel, personally, that Forward was a bit soft in her relative lack of encouragement for "divorcing" toxic parents. I mean, if you can go so far as to call someone TOXIC, the implication is that even a small dose of them is detrimental to one's wellness. Also, any person who was raised by toxic parents has been systematically trained from day one of life to be a victim, so staying in relationship with said toxic parent(s) seems like an uphill battle of epic proportions--a lose/lose situation. I realize that many people hearing/reading this book are dealing with abusive parents who are not necessarily TOXIC, but the title states what the book is supposed to be about.
But it's a great book.

Revisado: 12-25-15
Don't agree at all with her sentiments about or experiences with parenting or romantic (un)faithfulness BUT I understand where she's coming from and she's a good person who gives a shit and is very entertaining. Best reader of any book I've listened to. Another great perspective on the absurdity of the Church of Scientology.

Historia
At some point, every one of us embarks on a journey to find love. We meet people, date, get into and out of relationships, all with the hope of finding someone with whom we share a deep connection. This seems standard now, but it’s wildly different from what people did even just decades ago. Single people today have more romantic options than at any point in human history. With technology, our abilities to connect with and sort through these options are staggering. So why are so many people frustrated?

Sexist despite effort not to be
Revisado: 09-26-15
I appreciate a lot of things he said regarding gender politics, but he lacked awareness around several things that really bugged me. He matter-of-fact-ly mentioned that he specified in his online dating profile that he wanted to date younger women, even though his girlfriend is in reality older. He didn't at all talk about that whole common older-male power dynamic or how women live longer than men so this is totally backwards. He also gave a shallow and very skewed perspective on the subject of monogamy (in favor of "open relationships") that appears to me to be quite sexist. The book is kinda funny though.

Anyone who saw an episode of Saturday Night Live between 1999 and 2006 knows Rachel Dratch. She was hilarious! So what happened to her? After a misbegotten part as Jenna on the pilot of 30 Rock, Dratch was only getting offered roles as "Lesbians. Secretaries. Sometimes secretaries who are lesbians." Her career at a low point, Dratch suddenly had time for yoga, dog- sitting, learning Spanish - and dating. After all, what did a forty-something single woman living in New York have to lose?

Pretty good
Revisado: 07-27-15
She's sweet and funny. I was personally put off by how little she is educated about birth, because I think of all the women who read or listen to this who may then also assume that what doctors tell them about "needing" a c-section is true, about the "need" for ultrasounds (that actually are completely inaccurate at determining the amount of amniotic fluid), etc. But I appreciate her discussion of the beauty standard and everything else. Very heartwarming and pleasant book.
