Historia
George Eliot's most ambitious novel is a masterly evocation of diverse lives and changing fortunes in a provincial community. Peopling its landscape are Dorothea Brooke, a young idealist whose search for intellectual fulfillment leads her into a disastrous marriage to the pedantic scholar Casaubon; and the charming but tactless Dr Lydgate, whose marriage to the spendthrift beauty Rosamund and pioneering medical methods threaten to undermine his career.

Dorothea - passionate and philanthropic, yet she makes a grave error in the choice of Mr Casubon as her husband.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The final scene between Dorothea and Rosamund

A beautiful, nuanced performance of a great English novel

Cormoran Strike - a private detective for the ages
Revisado: 08-14-13
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
A surprising, delightful story in the private detective genre containing rich, fully developed characters, touching many walks of life. I appreciated getting to know a character affected profoundly by military service in Afghanistan. Here's hoping for many more in this series from "Robert Galbraith."
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Cuckoo's Calling?
The twister near the end of the story. I knew there would be one - it still surprised me in the form it took.
Which scene was your favorite?
Being in the medical field, I was fascinated as Cormoran coped with his physical disability under trying physical circumstances.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I was moved by how well I came to know and understand the young woman whose death is introduced in the beginning of the story.
Any additional comments?
J.K Rowling is a wonderful writer. What a gift to us, the readers, that she is not confined to the fantasy genre but has moved into the present day world we all inhabit. Thank you Jo for a deep story and engaging characters.

Historia
When Barry Fairweather dies unexpectedly in his early 40s, the little town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils.... Pagford is not what it at first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the town's council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen.

Surprising in depth and characterization
Revisado: 08-14-13
What did you love best about The Casual Vacancy?
The development of multiple characters of all ages in an English small town - embracing all social classes.
What does Tom Hollander bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Mr Hollander's voices move seamlessly among the various characters, of all ages, both genders and all social classes.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I was moved by the inner struggles facing all of the characters and the deep courage shown by most of them in rising above this. Ms Rowling shows us that socioeconomic class is not the sole harbinger of courage or success.
After publication, I did not want to read this this - fearing disappointment after the Harry Potter series. What an amazing surprise and relief to discover the depth and range of Ms Rowlings' writing in a completely different genre. I am so glad to have taken a chance on this book. Mr Hollander's reading is near perfect.

Weak and disappointing
Revisado: 08-13-13
Would you try another book from A. X. Ahmad and/or Sam Dastor?
No
Has The Caretaker turned you off from other books in this genre?
No
How could the performance have been better?
The reader is an East Indian gentleman. His "voices" were difficult to distinguish amongst characters.
What character would you cut from The Caretaker?
The so-called hero was a disappointing man, unfaithful to his wife for no good reason - yet we were meant to sympathize with this relationship. The two main criminal characters were not dealt with adequately in the wrap up. Aspects of characters - painstakingly described, such as the 7 year old daughter wanting to be a lawyer were not tied up at the end. If this is the first of a series, the author suspended his characters and story at a poorly chosen point in time and plot. Altogether, weak and disappointing.
