We are constantly being formed by the world around us. To be formed by Jesus will require us to become his apprentice. To live by what the first Christian disciples called a Rule of Life—a set of practices and relational rhythms that slow us down and open up space in our daily lives for God to do what only God can do—transforms the deepest parts of us to become like him.

Historia
In theology, just as in battle, some hills are worth dying on. But how do we know which ones? When should doctrine divide, and when should unity prevail? Pastor Gavin Ortlund makes the case that while all doctrines matter, some are more essential than others. He considers how and what to prioritize in doctrine and ministry, encouraging humility and grace along the way. Using four basic categories of doctrine in order of importance, this book helps new and seasoned church leaders alike wisely labor both to uphold doctrine and to preserve unity.

So necessary.
Revisado: 05-07-23
This was the best book I've read this year so far. his attitude is humble but his guidance is profound. it was especially relevant for someone struggling with how to work with, or associate with, people and churches of other denominations. I found his examples to be very relevant and his personal story honest and relatable. I come from a different denominational background and hold different beliefs on several doctrines than the author, but still found this very powerful. will be recommending this to many friends.

good, but...
Revisado: 03-01-23
-Audio was the ideal way to consume this book since it's read by the co-authors. their voices are engaging authentic and enjoyable.
-The discussion on "manners" was very practical in guiding our conversations in a respectful way. If only all Christians followed these guidelines.
-The stories and examples are relevant and seem genuine.
The authors focus primarily on engaging with 'spiritual designers', a growing category of people who reject religion, embrace spirituality, and share beliefs with many of the major world religions, but pick and choose what they believe based on their own preferences. while I do feel somewhat more prepared for a discussion with people in this category, the book doesn't really address conversations with agnostics or Christians in name only.
Also, be prepared for significant diversions into egalitarianism and spiritual abuse. While both topics are major reasons why some people have left the church or rejected Jesus, it seemed like the authors enjoyed the opportunity to jump on the hobby horse here and drive their point home. This could be especially frustrating for someone with a complementarian view of women's role.
Overall, very much worth reading. gave me plenty of things to think about so I can be better prepared for casual spiritual conversations. I hope it inspires many more to confidently and lovingly point people to Jesus.

How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to each other that isn't true? While tackling these questions, Malcolm Gladwell was not solely writing a book for the page. He was also producing for the ear. In the audiobook version of Talking to Strangers, you’ll hear the voices of people he interviewed - scientists, criminologists, military psychologists.

Good read but conclusion was lacking
Revisado: 03-06-20
after reading a few of Malcolm gladwell's earlier books and a person recommendation regarding this one, I decided to read "talking to strangers".
The performance was incredible with actual sound bites of original speakers and authors where quotations are found in the original book. that combined with gladwell's exceptional voice, I'd recommend this audiobook over the print version.
what I found disappointing however, was the conclusion. Gladwell spends the entire book discussing humans inability to effectively communicate with strangers, a task we are required to do regularly throughout the course of daily life. his conclusion was a few sentences at the end that recognized that we need to do better. I was hoping for perhaps some concrete examples, psychological research, or discussion from experts about improving our ability and techniques for engaging with the strangers we so often misunderstand.

Historia
Bryan Stevenson was a young lawyer when he founded the Equal Justice Initiative, a legal practice dedicated to defending those most desperate and in need: the poor, the wrongly condemned, and women and children trapped in the farthest reaches of our criminal justice system. One of his first cases was that of Walter McMillian, a young man who was sentenced to die for a notorious murder he insisted he didn’t commit. The case drew Bryan into a tangle of conspiracy, political machination, and legal brinksmanship—and transformed his understanding of mercy and justice forever.

can't say enough good about the author
Revisado: 01-25-20
This book was so enjoyable because the author read it himself. the reading is so smooth and genuine. the story is a great mix of Bryan's work at EJI and Bryan's telling of a specific case and client.

Historia
The tipping point is that magic moment when an idea, trend, or social behavior crosses a threshold, tips, and spreads like wildfire. Just as a single sick person can start an epidemic of the flu, so too can a small but precisely targeted push cause a fashion trend, the popularity of a new product, or a drop in the crime rate. This widely acclaimed bestseller, in which Malcolm Gladwell explores and brilliantly illuminates the tipping point phenomenon, is already changing the way people throughout the world think about selling products and disseminating ideas.

The gospel of Jesus Christ—the good news that through Jesus we have been adopted as sons and daughters into God’s family—means that Christians ought to be at the forefront of the adoption of orphans in North America and around the world. Russell D. Moore does not shy away from this call in Adopted for Life, a popular-level, practical manifesto for Christians to adopt children and to help equip other Christian families to do the same.

I appreciated this book very much. some very thoughtful and thought provoking material. Author seems a bit prideful in his tone and choice of wording sometimes, but that's a small thing to overlook. This is DEFINITELY a message that our churches need to hear.

Great book, terrible accent
Revisado: 09-13-16
this book or compilation of essays is a very good read I highly recommend the few hours at the fake to listen to it. however in retrospect I would suggest reading it via Kindle or online since the reader of this audio book was very unfitting for the book. I'm sure he's a nice guy and his reading was impeccable, but I felt like I should be listening to The Hobbit or Harry Potter. something just didn't fit.
